@genoves,
I guess that the main reason we went to war with Germany is that Hitler made the mistake of declaring war on us.

@genoves,
You have just proven that you do not comprehend what you read. Trying to have a discussion with any one who fails to understand the English language is a lost cause.

@Advocate,
genoves doesn't understand what constitutes a declaration of war:

Quote:
Kerling's team landed from U-584 at Ponte Vedra Beach (25 miles [40 km] south-east of Jacksonville, Florida), on June 17. They were tasked with laying mines in four areas: the Pennsylvania Railroad in Newark NJ., canal sluices in both St. Louis and Cincinnati, and New York City's water supply pipes. The team made their way to Cincinnati, Ohio and split up, with two going to Chicago, Illinois and the others to New York. However, the Dasch confession led to the arrest of all of the men by July 10.

@cicerone imposter,
My English is clear. What language do you speak
I did not know that the main reason we went to war with Germany was the presence of a large Nazi spy ring in the United States.

How foolish of me. I thought it was because the Congress of the United States decided on MArch 11, 194 1 to pass the Lend-Lease Act which authorized the President to transferany arms or materials to the governm,ent of any country whose defense the President deemed vital to the DEFENSE OF THE UNITED STATES.

Those Congressmen must have been paranoic to tjhink that Adolf Hitler would try to isolate and then defeat the USA.

@genoves,
You do know how to miss the main point of my post; they were planning to bomb US targets. That is a declaration of war.

@cicerone imposter,

Advocate said it, above. Germany declared war on the USA.

They sank a few ships, too, off the eastern seaboard. A state of war existed before Congress or the president declared anything.

@McTag,
Yes, I failed to mention the U2's sinking US ships.

genoves is wrong most of the time, so it's not surprising he fails to understand any history.

@cicerone imposter,
Have you heard of a ship called the good Reuben James
Manned by hard fighting men both of honor and fame?
She flew the Stars and Stripes of the land of the free
But tonight she's in her grave at the bottom of the sea.

Tell me what were their names, tell me what were their names,
Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James?
What were their names, tell me, what were their names?
Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James

Well, a hundred men went down in that dark watery grave
When that good ship went down only forty-four were saved.
'Twas the last day of October we saved the forty-four
From the cold ocean waters and the cold icy shore.

It was there in the dark of that uncertain night
That we watched for the U-boats and waited for a fight.
Then a whine and a rock and a great explosion roared
And they laid the Reuben James on that cold ocean floor.

Now tonight there are lights in our country so bright
In the farms and in the cities they're telling of the fight.
And now our mighty battleships will steam the bounding main
And remember the name of that good Reuben James.

@cicerone imposter,
Actually, no it wasnt.
The formal declaration of war was supposed to be presented to the White House 1 hour BEFORE the attack on Pearl harbor, but due to a clerical problem it was delivered late.

So while the attack on PH was the start of hostilities (and there is room for debate on that also) the actual declaration of war was delivered AFTER the attack.

Lets correct your statement.
You are correct when you said
Quote:
First, Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor

But then you get it wrong.
The Japanese declared war on the afternoon (Washington DC time) of Sunday Dec 7.
The US declared war against Japan on Monday Dec 8.

Germany declared war against the US on Dec 11.
And the US declared war against Germany on Dec 11 also, AFTER Germany declared war.

@mysteryman,
What was supposed to have happened is not the point; when they attacked us at Pearl Harbor, that "was" their declaration of war.

If any country attacks us to destroy our military complex, that automatically becomes a declaration of war. That the president might later announce it is a political formality. Nobody on this planet is going to assume the first attack on our country by a foreign nation was not a declaration of war; that would be asinine to the extreme.

@cicerone imposter,
If any country wishes to declare war by not announcing their sneak attack, it's still a declaration of war.

Well good. You can stop blaming President Bush for declaring war on Iraq then. Clinton did that when he ordered all those bombing runs without telegraphing to Saddam that they were coming. Of course Clinton also declared war on Haiti and Somalia and Yemen and Bosnia. Who knew? And lets don't forget that Reagan declared war on Panama and Granada. My goodness, we've declared a lot of wars, haven't we?

@Foxfyre,
Foxie, You have no clue why Bush's Iraq war was illegal, immoral, and just plain wrong. Might doesn't make right; our spending 10 billion every month in Iraq is not only atrocious but a harm against Americans that can only be measured in the future of our economy and security. We are now "tasting" the damage done, but you MACs don't understand anything about right and wrong.

From the Congressional Research Service-Library of Congress:

Quote:
Two separate but closely related issues
confront Congress each time the President
introduces armed forces into a situation
abroad that conceivably could lead to their
involvement in hostilities. One issue concerns
the division of war powers between the President
and Congress, whether the use of armed
forces falls within the purview of the congressional
power to declare war and the War
Powers Resolution. The other issue is whether
Congress concurs in the wisdom of the action.
[... ... ...]
Presidents have submitted 115 reports to Congress as a result of the War Powers
Resolution. Of these, President Ford submitted 4, President Carter one, President Reagan 14,
President George H.W. Bush 7, President Clinton 60, and President George W. Bush 29.

Same institution as above: Declarations of War and Authorisation for the Use of Military Force ...

Quote:
From the Washington Administration to the present, Congress and the President have
enacted 11 separate formal declarations of war against foreign nations in five different wars.
Each declaration has been preceded by a presidential request either in writing or in person
before a joint session of Congress. The reasons cited in justification for the requests have
included armed attacks on United States territory or its citizens and threats to United States
rights or interests as a sovereign nation.
... ... ...

11 separate formal declarations of war against foreign nations in five different wars:
War with Great Britain 1812
War with Mexico 1846
War with Spain 1898
War with Germany 1917
War with Austria-Hungary 1917
War with Japan 1941
War with Germany 1941
War with Italy 1941
War With Bulgaria 1942
War with Hungary 1942
War with Rumania 1942

@Walter Hinteler,
Thanks for the history lesson Walter and the distinction between declaring war and authorizing military action. I know this. You know this.

But the point went right over C.I.'s head.

Oh well.

@Foxfyre,
No, it didn't; it's "necessary" for the president to declare war, and the congress to fund it. However, if any country attacks our country, it will always follow that the president will declare war and the congress to fund it. Tell me of any incident where any attack on our country did not follow this pattern?

Better yet, tell me if any president will not follow this pattern if our country is attacked by another?

It's called a "given" without any exceptions.
