Don't think it was neglect, Au. Think it contained elements of intentionality. Timing is everything. 11/04 is the focus.

McG, I'm not sure who said liberals are blaming Bush for "cooking the books," but we must learn to lay the blame where it really belongs. Some of it belongs to the accounting profession for allowing companies like Enron to cook their books. Most of the blame belongs to those people looking to enrich themselves without regards to who they hurt. It's a thing called lack of "ethics." Unfortunately, not only does GWBush and his henchmen/women belong in this category, but also all the CEO's that earn outrageous salaries and stock options at the cost of jobs for many. It's interesting that this president forgot how to use his famous quote, "compassionate conservative" so quickly. Maybe, you haven't noticed. c.i.

Do not agree. Can you imagine what a hero he would have been were he able to stop the bleeding.
The economy is the chink in Bush's armor. Overall his fight against terrorism is generally applauded by the American people. That is what sustains his poll numbers.
The lack of a viable democratic candidate, policy and the war on terrorism will get him reelected IMO.

The other evening, Au, at an "announcement party" for Howard Dean, I sat next to a guy who was incredibly well informed about the timing of certain Bush actions in the run-up to the 2002 congressional elections. When you look back on that stuff (we were in the midst of it then, some didn't see the pattern), you see a degree of manipulation, fueled by $$$, which was new to American politics. I figure that was their practice session...

It's been my HO that any president doesn't have all that much influence on our economy, simply because government does not create jobs. When Bush makes that statement that he's going to "create jobs," he simply doesn't know what he's talking about. The way he can create jobs is to open up a commercial business, hire workers, and keep them working in a profitable enterprise. Giving back taxpayer money doesn't create jobs. People who spend their income create jobs. c.i.

Tax cuts do not "give back taxpayer money". Tax cuts reduce the amount of money the government takes away from the taxpayer. Leaving more money in the hands of individuals allows them to save more or spend more, both have a positive impact on business and the economy, which spurs growth and the need for more employees.

That is what happened to the economy. Bush in his ignorance let it bleed out.

The economy seems to be improving, which may well be in large part due to the choices Bush has made. Your bias does not premit you to consider this possibility, but that does not mean it is not a possibility.

I can't see how my biases--or lack thereof--can be blamed for the fact that you are "blindly blundering in the dark". I am afraid the fault for that lies with you.

Scrat, I guess those $400 dollar checks to be disbursed by the feds aren't "giving back money they took in the first place." c.i.

Not really... They are prepayments against a reduction in taxes which will be owed at the end of this tax year. The government isn't giving me back $400 dollars they took from me. They are effectively saying, "here's $400 of the tax savings you will see when you file taxes next year".

But I suppose you can call it "giving back" if you want. If you meant these rebates, that's cool. I don't intend to split hairs, I was talking of tax cuts where perhaps you meant the rebates. (When people talk about tax cuts as the government "giving" money to taxpayers, it sounds as if people think the money was the government's in the first place. That's the notion I meant to speak against.)

Indeed giving a tax cut to someone who already has millions to spend will make him spend more. What dream world are you living in?

Yes, so much so that the federal reserve lowered the rate to 1%, out of desperation I might add.
It goes like this
If your neighbor is out of work it's a recession. If you are out of work it a depression.
Yeah. It's improving. For whom?
