I just saw Antwone Fisher, and it knocked me plumb out. Such a positive, powerful movie about the human spirit, and love. If that's Denzel's first outing as a director, I hate to see what he can do with experience. God! Why aren't more movies like this, with such gut-level really human portrayals of black people, made in this country?

An amazing movie... anyone else see it? Like it? Not? Why?

It is on my top 5 list of movies to see. We have friends who have told us that it is amazing, and one movie that will actually make a strong man cry. I am looking forward to seeing it.

Snood was downplaying the greatness of this movie in his comments! I just saw it and have to say it was one of the most, if not the most moving films, I have ever seen. It's not only true that we need more "beyond gut-level human portrayals of black people", but as an adoptee, tears just streamed down my face as I watched Antwone search and find his birth family. But, believe me, that is just a small part of this incredible work of art. I won't refer to anything else so as not to give away in any way the enormous themes of the movie, however, to anyone out there who wants to see a terrific one, please see Antwone Fisher. . . words can't capture the depth of my feelings.

Y'know, it won't really suprise me if not many people on this board can comment about this movie, because they will never bother to see the movie. It won't be suprising, but its still disappointing. In america, entertainment vehicles that depict blacks as minstrels or criminals still attract all the attention. Invariably the endeavors that attempt to show the whole spectrum of human experience from a black perspective get ignored - not commercially viable. Its part of why I can never work up all the mindless patriotism that some people seem to require sometimes. They just ******* aren't interested, period.

Snood,

I saw AF over the weekend and have a generally favorable opinion of it. Certainly, I appreciate what Washington was trying to do. I have a question or two and a comment, but I haven't the time at the moment. I'll be back.

I recommend the film to all.

Antwone Fisher should have been a classic..
This film is a classic in my book.
For his first time as director Washington was superb.
a little more money spent for more cameramen and this film is a Great all time top 10 movie.
Just watch the dvd with comment from the director ( of course after you watch it as intended )
The writing is beyond words to describe.
The acting is top of the line.
After watching it for the first time I looked at my wife and with tears in my eyes "we need to buy this one."

Great to hear all the positives on this film, I had heard breifly that it was a good film and have been passing it by the last couple weekends as a have to watch at some point but, not right this moment...perhaps the next trip by I will certainly pick it up. It is unfortunate that not many people know of it, as if more people around ehre had the same enthusiasm as you of it, I would have picked it up earlier.

I finally had time to watch it (from the beginning) yesterday. Absolutely one of the best movies I've ever seen!

The scene that made me cry the hardest was when he and Denzel were saying his poem "Who will cry for the little boy?" I'm crying now as I type.

The film is compelling, moving, uplifting - I highly recommend it to everyone. I was surprised that it's rated PG-13, though - I found the scenes of physical abuse and descriptions of sexual abuse to be quite graphic.

I think the thanks should go to Snood for suggesting such a great film to all of us; not to those of us who 'bothered' to watch it. My heavens, this was no bother, no bother at all . . .

Snood, the only place where this movie broke down was at the very end when Washington delivered a speech explaining his reconciliation with his wife. I always hate speeches of this kind. This is after all a movie. Why not let us know that everything is okay between them with an affectionate look or a kiss or something. This is a case of a picture being more effective than a speech. We all wanted the reconciliation, but the details were unimportant.

Aside from this little anti-climactic scene, the film was gripping.

Yes, Hazlitt, I can understand your point of view, but I can see where a kiss or an affectionate look might come off as contrived and, IMHO, in this type of message movie, the words were needed. I mean, it does all comes down to the fact that the reconciliation of the husband and wife is, after all, what we all really wanted, right Snood?
