Well, much as I would like to share ehBeth & setanta's feast <sigh> I'm afraid that the best I can manage tonight is some de-frozen vegetable soup! Sad Not that it was ghastly, or anything .... but something more exciting would be wonderful! <sigh>

I got home last night, looked in the fridge, felt that feeling of doom..... and the phone rang - did I want to go out to dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant. Took me all of 1 second to agree!

Interesting food - green pawpaw salad with prawns, fresh prawn rolls, salt and chili pork, and a yellow chicken curry (the dud dish - dross that one off the list!)

All much better than dredging something up at home - when I'm uninspired.

It's mid-winter day today (midsummer for most of you!) - Summer's coming - we still have some cold weather - but I KNOW that summer is coming! Just makes you feel better!

There are a couple of great little places near the Brunswick House for taboulli these days. One of my favourites is Sarah's.

Mulling. There's a photo somewhere.

I was only a mild fa of tabouli untilI tried some at one restaurant on the cape. Now, that restaurant is closed and no one compares. It was almost all parsley and lemon juice with very little bulgar/tomato/onion. Sooooo yummmmmyyyy...... So sad it's closed. But, I found a brand that is ok.

this place was a little hole in the wall place, northwest corner of bloor and brunswick if memory serves

oh and the hungarian places in that area, goulash and rye bread and a night at the bloor cinema or a band at the brunswick

I think all of the Hungarian gulasch houses are closed now. Elizabeth closed last year.

Now it's Lebanese, Korean and trendoid restos. There's a decent Nepalese restaurant on the south side - about a block east of The Brunswick House.

a view of the west side of the Brunswick House about 4 or 5 weeks ago (from the patio of Future Bakery - still the best all-day breakfast going)

I've just had a very early dinner! - it's not quite 5:30 yet.
I decided to get back into the habit of some daily walking during this holiday, so set off on this chilly afternoon & did a very round-about, meandering trip to the main shopping centre in Sydney Road. .... Which led me to the Half Moon Cafe. Which led to one of those delicious falafel rolls/wraps. Yum! I think I'm becoming addicted to those tangy, salty middle eastern pickled turnips. (Yes, turnips! Delicious!) ..... Which led to to the little shop a couple of doors up, where I bought a great, big jar of pickled turnips. And some camomile tea, plus some middle eastern flat bread, a jar of mysterious dried capsicum (never seen these before!) to use in my own cooking, plus a scoop of spicy macadamia nuts to munch on, on my way home. I should do these walks more often! Very Happy

Girl, you are way ahead of me on pickled turnips.

Looks around Albuquerque for turnips of any sort,

but, oh, wait, they're winter veggies.

OK, waiting for winter...

osso

They are very crunchy & sharp in taste! I ate the little blighters for years before I realized that they were actually turnips! Surprised I thought they were some exotic, secret middle eastern vegetable!

... & they come packaged in a clear purple-ish pickling liquid! Nothing, absolutely nothing to suggest turnips! They are sort of pinkish when you take them out of the jar.

I was really looking forward to going out for dinner last night for my daughter's birthday, until she chose Olive Garden. Oh well.
