@farmerman,

For tonight I made a stew, a stoo.

Just a few ingredients, as after starting I found out I had no carrots. Diced braising steak, two onions, can of chopped tomatoes, four potatoes cut up small, and a tin of red beans.
Mixed herbs, and dried basil. And a chicken stock cube, don't ask me why. Quite a lot of ground black pepper, and salt to taste.

We're going to have it with wholewheat organic pitta breads, because we're on a diet. No trimmings. Maybe I'll do a green salad later.

I went out and bought a heat-diffuser mat for the hob, as out hob burns too easily, (I've been meaning to get one for ages) and now I've put the stoo in the oven as a casserole to finish off.

@farmerman,
the word bread, when spoken in the south US, has 2 distinct syllables. The word is BRAY'-ED

@msolga,
Well, Ive been taking over a drilling commitment on a mining job that, because of all the rain weve had, has really screwed up my company's schedules. Im sitting a drill rig and eating out at truck stops , barbecue joints, and road houses.

I never EVER, eat at fass food or motel restaurants.

@farmerman,
There used to be a little hole in the wall restaurant attached to the independently owned Stagecoach Motel in Carlsbad NM that positively had the best catfish in the world. When working in that corner of the state, I intentionally scheduled stopovers in Carlsbad just to get some of that catfish. It was a huge disappointment when the restaurant changed managers and the menu. I stayed in Hobbs thereafter.

@farmerman,

A hob is the top of a cooker where the gas rings are, maybe electric hotplates.

It all used to be a "cooker" here, but now of course in a kitchen the oven is often elsewhere from the top, which we call a hob.

Nothing to do with hob-nailed boots, though.

@McTag,
Laughing

There are no one-syllable words in Texas. I remember a comedian, illustrating and punctuated with his finger, explaining that the longest word in American vernacular was: Shhhhhhhhhhh-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-uuuuuuuuuuuuuuut!

What the heck, lets see what happens. Took frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts. Sliced into strips, oiled, loaded the strips in a seasoned flour filled gallon ziplock. Shake, shake, shake the booty. Skillet. More oil. Was wondering what was going to happen with the chicken still being frozen, the coatings, the moisture inside, oil. They fried perfectly. Tossed with spicy garlic wing sauce. Served with loaded baked potato, macaroni and cheese.

McTag...I remember the first time I was introduced to a "hob." I didn't say that it was a "burner" to me...just added it to the lexicon. I have wondered where that word hob came from. Burner was obvious.

I have an electric toaster oven at our cottage in Ireland...it has a hob on top. Most useful appliance I've ever had...if the gas bottle runs out, I put a pasta-water pot on the hob, some onions and peppers and stuff in the toaster oven...dinner time.

One large baked potato with sour cream & chives. (Ruined my appetite for dinner by indulging in some rather nice Brie on savoury biscuits late this afternoon ... & before that, some Bratwurst in a roll for lunch, while out shopping. <burp!> )
