@Endymion,
steamed rice

I have a little story here.

I bought one of those veggie steamer/rice cooker combo thingies some years ago. Couldn't find the directions the first time I wanted to cook rice. I figgered I'd steamed veggies in it, how different could it be?

Soooooooo, I put water in the bottom, the rice on the insert, put the lid on, plugged it in and started studying. Noticed the house getting a bit mmm warm about an hour later. Looked at the steamer. Hmmmmmmm, water's getting low. Added water. Back to studying. Checked an hour later. Water's low. Added water. Back to studying. Lifted my head again about an hour later. Hmmmm, something's wrong.

The windows on the ground floor of the house are completely steamed up, there is no water in the steamer, again. The rice is hard as pebbles, but hot. Turns out you can't really steam rice - it needs the boiling water contact to break the shell, or something to that effect.

Even three hours of steaming doesn't do anything to rice, other than heat the pellets.

@alex240101,
holy kamoley, was that some sort of progressive meal?

~~~
I had pumpernickel toast with liver sausage and preserves before the trick or treaters came around. A big bowl of cereal afterward.
@ehBeth,
Last night my lady and I dined on Thai food. I'm not even sure what it was except that it was chicken.
@Rockhead,
I'm warming up a cherry pie to have with some old cheddar. I'm not sure I want any of the healthy stuff that's supposed to happen first.
@hamburger,
Just an old fashioned dinner tonight. Chicken soup, followed by Red Cabbage with potatoes and sauce, accompanied by a large grilled pork chop. For dessert, bowl of rock melon, custard and vanilla ice cream.
@Dutchy,
Sounds pretty good to me, Dutchy!
And I've said it before, but hamburger's meals always sound so fantastic ... I'm very jealous. Wish I could eat so well all the time.
Today I had an early dinner/very late lunch at a new cafe in Little Saigon. Tried out the pho & it was so delicious! A huge bowl of the stuff, with lots of pork dumplings, prawns, a little sliced meat & a heap of greens sitting on a bed of rice noodles, all swimming in a very tasty stock. A squeeze of lemon & a few pieces of sliced red chilli just made it perfect. Yum, I'll be back for more later, I'm sure!
@Dutchy,
it was porkchop (single) in eastern ontario too .
a real monster chop - large enough for the two of us .
freshly made sweet potato and butternut squash dish on the side ,
red potatoes in the jacket - butter on the side ,
tommy toe juice .
picked up a nice (and LARGE !) apple/frangipane cake and a freshly made sourdough loaf at pan chanco this morning - guess what's for tea ?
(the frangipane will last us a week) .
msolga, you may envy, but I drool from memory. We used to live in hamburger's city and I recall pan chancho's with fondness. His post's are often a cruel reminder of what I'm missing! (Note to self -- must learn to bake...)
Meanwhile I've got a back bacon "roast" in the oven slathered in a mixture of honey and Dijon mustard (ehBeth's recipe -- they're quite a family, eh?). Leftover roast vegetables to pan fry when my better half gets home. Oh, and there's still some beef barley soup (it turned out really well).
Try one of Mark Bittman no-knead bread recipes, you'll get over your dreams of Pan Chancho. Well, not completely, but it makes great bread sooo easily.
Baking? I haven't even gotten around to attempting that, Tai! Maybe next year?
But doesn't every single dinner from the hamburger kitchen look perfect? I wish I could eat like that every day. Sigh. Hamburger is a lucky, lucky man.
