I don't know much about Cinco de Mayo
I'm never sure what it's all about
I say I want you, and you don't believe me
You say you want me, but I've got my doubts

Oh baby, I was bound for Mexico
Oh baby, I was bound to let you go

How do you say "1000 de Mayo"?

That would be "Mil de Mayo" but it wouldn't make any sense since there are only 31 days in the month of May.

Nevertheless, it's nice that cjhsa is trying to learn Spanish. That way, he could at least warn people before shooting them Twisted Evil

I wonder how you could say cjhsa en spanish. Probably: "cuidense que hay les voy!"

It's funny how many americans - at least in California - celebrate 5 de Mayo as an excuse for getting drunk. I even guess they have a better time than we do!

My mexican friends here call Cinco de Mayo:

"La fiesta mas gringa"

Most Americans get confused between Cinco de Mayo and independence day.

Cinco de Mayo is a great example of how tensions between Mexico and America can collide, as well as being a holiday.

At the University of Texas, we weren't allowed to hold a school-wide celebration of Texas Independence Day because many Hispanic students complained that it was a racist holidy. But you better believe we hold a Cinco De Mayo celebration every year.

Which is complete bullsh*t, but whatever. Wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings or anything, right? Right.

Not only that but to stuff ourselves on one of the world's best cuisines (and most fattening) Mexican food. When I lived in Texas, I mastered the art of cooking Tex-Mex as well Texas BBQ. I ballooned to near 270 lbs. I reversed that behavior and am now nearly svelte.

No Cinqo de Mayo binge for me. When I reach my target, I may go out and celebrate with margaritas, nachos and Chile Relleno.

? I'm not mad at all. You only percieve it to be so because I criticize the fact that we are not allowed to support Texan holdidays, but are encouraged to support Mexican holdiays.

It's a good example of political correctness run amok.

Why do you feel such a need to judge me? Because of the opinions I hold about dealing with illegal immigration?

I find it to be pretty funny that you would even say that, becuase everything in my life is great at the moment, and I'm the happiest person I know. Don't confuse policy discussion with emotional discourse.

Come on a fifty mile bike ride with me west of Austin sometime and then say that, Cj, haha.

Last time I checked, whites aren't in the minority. Nor are they opressed, generally, outside of Freeperville wet dreams. I also don't really believe in the term 'white' as though I am technically anglo, my skin is much closer colored to a Mexicans' than the average anglo, due to my heritage.

Texas fought pretty hard to free themselves from Mexico. Even though we are now part of the union, there is absolutely no reason why our heritage and traditions aren't just as important as anyone else's.

There is some truth to that. There is also truth that subsequent generations sometimes rewrite history to conform to a particular ideological perspective. One needs to be wary in both cases.

The following is floating around the internet this week.

According to Snopes, analysis of the following: TRUE
http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/lamm.asp

The referenced speech was given in 2005 and when Snopes contacted Governor Lamm to confirm it, he provided them with a revised version of it that is also posted at the Snopes site.

So what do you think? Honest? Or racist? Or both?

A Frightening Analysis First to destroy America, "Turn America into a bilingual or multi-lingual and bicultural country. History shows that no nation can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The historical scholar Seymour Lipset put it this way: 'The histories of bilingual and bi-cultural societies that do not assimilate are histories of turmoil, tension, and tragedy. Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press for autonomy, if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided. Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with Basques, Bretons, and Corsicans."

Lamm went on: Second, to destroy America, "Invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage immigrants to maintain their culture. I would make it an article of belief that all cultures are equal. That there are no cultural differences. I would make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.

Third, "We could make the United States a 'Hispanic Quebec' without much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: 'The apparent success of our own multiethnic and multicultural experiment might have been achieved! Not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance that once dictated ethnocentrically and what it meant to be an American, we are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together.'"

Lamm said, "I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural subgroups living in America reinforcing their differences rather than as Americans, emphasizing their similarities."

"Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated, and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass have a 50% dropout rate from high school."

"My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I would get all minorities to think their lack of success was the fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all minority failure on the majority population."

"My sixth plan for America's downfall would include dual citizenship and promote divided loyalties."Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits ~ make it taboo to talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century - that stopped discussion and paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'x! xenophobes' halt discussion and debate."

"Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country, having established multi-culturism, having the large foundations fund the doctrine of 'Victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has been good for America, it must always be good. I would make every individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of millions of them."

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound silence followed. Finally he said, "Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson Davis's book Mexifornia. His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to destroy America. If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't read that book."

It is racist and not honest. For example...

Quote:

That there are no cultural differences. I would make it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other explanation is out of bounds.

Lamm implies that "cultural differences" are the reason that Blacks and Hispanics (it is interesting that he puts these two groups together). He complains that other explanations are "out of bounds".... but what other explanation is he offering.
