is it possible for a person to suffer a mental breakdown/depression and to seem in total control of their life. to most people to seem fine but to those closest to be totaly out of caracter, to be forgetting to attend important meetings and missing planes.to be avoiding their nearest and dearest and getting angry when people close to them try to give advice.to believe that the most important thing in life is their happiness and to abandon all that they once loved (friends, family, home).
to seem to be obsessed with work and to spend 12-14 hours a day working and then during time off to be thinking and contacting work with the intention of solving small problems that could wait. yet seem to be preforming extremely well in work despite chaos all around their private life and to show no emotion whatsoever (would normally be a very emotional person)

Re: mental health and depression
greg1, my first reaction is that of a layperson's.

Here goes: Yes, it is definitely possible, even probable, to be depressed in, e.g. one's personal life, and have that manifest by overinvolvement in, e.g. one's professional life.

That would cause people to see the professional/work facade as the person and most people in that area of the depressed person's life will go no further.

However, if the depressed person still has friends, family, home etc., and nobody is doing anything to help, it is no wonder to me that the behavior you describe has manifested and the depressed person's behavior is a coping mechanism. Moreover, in this layperson's opinion, the depressed person must reach out to others in order to reverse what might be a complete breakdown.

Have you seen this site? http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/depression.cfm

It might be of help ...

Have you ( or the person you're disussing) suffered a personal loss recently?

no loss but some family developments that will cause pain will be announced very soon. a huge amount of work related stress and a lot of time spent away from home with work are the only unusual events.

There are also other conditions this may be. You might want to check out this site for some answers:

http://www.namiwisconsin.org/library/resourceguide/mentalillness_symptoms.cfm

After reading the home page, you can click on Table of Contents and it lists different types of disorders, etc. I hope you find the answers you are seeking.

greg1,
From what I have read from your other thread, I would not be surprised that you are feeling this way.

Please do not minimize what you are going through. It would be extremely stressful to anyone, anywhere. It is a huge life change.

"no loss but some family developments that will cause pain will be announced very soon. a huge amount of work related stress and a lot of time spent away from home with work are the only unusual events."

That's a lot on your plate!

You're smart to have recognized how it is affecting you, so quickly. You can catch yourself and build up a support system to keep you from slipping down further.

I think you need some practical help through this time....to work out solutions to the new challenges you are facing.

Don't be afraid to ask for help from those you love and who have been known to support you. Now's the time to let them carry you through some of the dark patches.

I don't see how you could avoid this mental health condition, given what you've described elsewhere.

For what it's worth, at least it should be of some help to know that your emotional state is not unreasonable given that situation.

thanks for the concern, i know that it seems to be me that i'm talking about but it's not. i'm not too bad i have friends around me and i use them when i need them. i've seen a councilor and have a good grip on things. i am worried about herself and what i described is about her.
