I'm glad you asked, Roberta.

I didn't want to appear uncool.

Yeppers.

I remember looking at some fora a few years ago, and they were a real craze amongst those who could pay for them.

People got together and had meetups, and play dates for their Aibo, and all.

Also interesting how many people really value internet contact from people all over the world, isn't it?

I wonder if it will ever actually make a difference to the seemingly effortless ability to foment hatred between different groups of people?

Uncool!!! How ya gonna find out stuff if you don't ask? If I hadn't asked, I wouldn't know that bm stands for bookmark. The first time I saw it, I thought it was bowel movement. It just seemed a bit out of context and out of character for the person posting. So I asked. Live and loin.

Damn, Deb!

A typo!

I was gonna throw in the odd howeb into my conversations!

About the internet as a great bringer-together of folk from all over the place.... Yes, great opportunities there.

I thought it might have been one of those super cool terms that only the in folk know about, Roberta!

Once, here on A2K I posted a bm to this very serious fellow's very heavy thread & he got all nasty, thinking I was having a go at him! Laughing

Hey!

Let's start throwing the odd "howeb" into our posts elsewhere and see if we can create a craze!

Howeb, everyone! Very Happy

OK, what do you think?
I'm debating the pros & cons of getting a bird bath for my backyard garden. I worry, on some of these hideously hot & dry summer days, about the lack of drinking water for the birds that frequent this area . Quite a lot of birds, big & small, native & feral, frequent my garden. I've found a bird bath that would do the job nicely, a rather pretty one actually .... but I'd hate my feathered friends to be soft targets for my furry companion. (I haven't seen any evidence so far that's she's killed any birds here, BTW) Do any of you have a cat (or cats) plus a bird bath? Any problems or <shudder> bird killings? Or are the birds smarter than that?
Any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Ta,
Olga

I'm not sure about the standard birdbath + cat equation because I've never had both at the same time. But just wanted to mention that when I was shopping for one myself (found a really nice one at Smith & Hawken cheap after Christmas!) I saw some hanging birdbaths, like this:

That would seem to foil kittycats if hung in the right place.

Thanks for that quick response, soz.
I like it!
That would be a great solution if I had taller trees in my yard. I have a longish, narrowish yard (tiny Victorian terrace house) & have planted tallish shrubs (mainly natives) plus a mandarine tree (more of a bush, really) & a feijoa. Not really suitable for hanging things from. Though the wattle birds love hanging upside down on branches of the bottle brushes & nibbling away at them! Very Happy
So if I do have a bath for the birds, it'll have to be one of the "sitting on the ground/garden" variety, unfortunately.

Yes she does, margo. She likes to snooze in the afternoons on the mulch around the roses.
It's cooler there, then.

Hmmmmm ...... I'd really like to have a bird bath! Sad

Maybe try it and see how it goes?

You may, by natural selection, end up with a race of super smart super fit birds!

I was gonna ask if there are cat proof bird baths. But then I realized what a dopey question that was. There's no such thing as cat proof.

However, see the following link, which claims to be cat proof.

that was a good bit of research Roberta

How are your woodworking skills msolga? Himself made a wooden post about 5ft/5ft 6in high with sticky out supports at the bottom (techinical term that Twisted Evil ) to stop it falling in the wind and a simple wooden platform on top (the one the squirrels were sitting on) - we have an old metal bowl on it with water in and the birds love it.

Cheaper than buying a ready made birdbath as well.

Paddy-the-demon-cat did make it to the top once but by the time he scrambled up there any birds would be long gone.

Alternatively you could install the bird bath on top of a brick plinth, to make it much taller and harder for cats to jump silently.

my father took a water supply out to his and leaves it dripping very slightly, to constantly refill the bird bath Rolling Eyes - - there's a healthy population of frogs amongst the flowers below it!

Actually, I think I have them already, Deb.

And aggressive! My wattle birds take crap from no cat, let me tell you!
