Millions of Cats
When my children were small, one of their favorite books was Millions of Cats. I read it to them over and over. Butrflynet even memorized every word by the time she was three.

Millions of Cats is a wonderful tale of vanity versus humility, written and illustrated by the singular Wanda Gag. An old man and his wife decide to get a cat, so the old man goes out in search of the prettiest cat of all. When he is forced to choose from "hundreds, thousands, millions and billions and trillions" of cats, he (naturally) brings them all home. When the wife points out their inability to support the legion of felines, it is left to the cats to decide who among them is the prettiest.
Anyone who has ever owned more than a single cat can tell you what happens next.

Gag's simple, appealing black ink drawings are perfect for the story, somehow capturing at least the idea of millions of cats in a single page. Repeated lines and the sing-song title refrain make this a read-aloud natural.

I used to have thirty cats and kittens when I was younger.

I thought the one in the Tate was one of your's, Vivien.

That looks a wonderful book, BBB.

Reminds me of the time my ex & I had to go to the Cat Protection Society, to look for a lost cat. They couldn't place our missing cat from my description, but said I could go look for myself. Well! Wall to wall cats! Surprised Big ones, little ones, tabbies, black cats, tuxedo cats .... on bunks, asleep, talking, meowing, purring ....
I bent down to pat one & was immediately surrounded! A cat on my shoulder, one rubbing against my leg, another one calling for attention from its bunk! I have never seen so many beautiful cats in one spot. If I had to choose one it would have been hopeless! I would have had to take the lot! Laughing
(Sadly, we never found our lost cat.)

They lay along the blighted road,
Their matted fur and damp abode.
No hand to carry them inside
Where once the warmth within them
Sighed contentment.

One head was pointed to the west
The other's to the ocean's crest
A silent testament to all the worst
And best within us lies.

Today I shed unwanted tears
For those wet bodies
and my fears.

Yes, msolga. I wrote it. As I once observed, I still cry over unexpected things.

I not only didn't think I could get away with it, I was absolutely certain that I wouldn't, and every day that went without my comeuppance was a day in which the suspense increased to nearly unbearable proportions, well except for the "nearly," and now that cows have come home to roost (that is how it goes, isn't it?) and my uppance has come I can finally, finally, exhale...

dlowan, I think it'd be more like shins. Kneecaps are a bit high you know.

I made cheese sauce for mac & cheese tonight and let Lou lick my plate. He absolutely loved it - lapped it up like a dog. I know cats are mostly lactose intolerant, but it's New Years. Fart away Lou.

and me Very Happy - must be evening/night in Oz by now and virtually over.

The bill for cheapo scones is going up - not only the birds and our cats like them - but now the squirrels! One narrowly missed being caught by Paddy the devil cat a few minutes ago as it was so intent on its piece of scone.

Tell us more about these squirrels, Vivien. I'd love to have some in my yard! I'm jealous.

Oh, that Paddy!
<waving finger menacingly> Paws off the squirrel residents, you naughty boy!
