Why does this 6 month old cat make loud 'mewing?' sounds, hard to describe, when playing with a particular toy?

There is no catnip in it, it's just a small soft ball, that she seeks out and carries around with her. She sounds like she's in pain or distressed! Should I take it off her?

She's reverting to her primitive instincts, Sarah. Remember, her ancestors were most likely wild, ferocious African critters! Great hunters & torturers of innocent victims! She's having a great time! Very Happy

Should you take it off here? Well, feline experts would no doubt be divided on the best course of action. But me, I'd let her have her vile way with her toy. Better it than your ankle, I say! Much safer for you!

The Breakfast Wars continue in the msolga household. Poppy absolutely refuses to have anything to do with dried cat food, even the salubrious, super-expensive brands! (Well, I can't let her live on just meat & fish alone - all protein - can I? Can I?)
So we have the most amazing performances as she attempts to twist my arm into giving her what she likes best: meat, meat, meat! Dear reader, I have tried to be strong & really, most of the time I am, but she puts on such a performance! Shocked Today is my whole day off work & she has almost tripped me up every time I've entered the kitchen. She romps in front of me, then stops dead in front of her food bowl, almost tripping me up & giving me very meaningful looks! "Give me what I want, NOW!!" <sigh>

Any ideas for a breakfast alternative, anyone? I now have about 6 different brands of dried food in stock on my cat food shelf.

Apart from this, she's a delight! Whatta girl! Very Happy

Lol!!!

I have the opposite problem...or did.

Miranda would almost exclusively eat DRY food!

She has now started guzzling down SOME of the expensive delights I buy her.

Why? Dunno.

She's a goddamn cat....why should she make sense!

I can only suggest giving Poppy no options, and hardening that soft heart of your's, Msolga.

Pretend she's Howard.

That works best for us and for 2 out of 3 of our cats. LOL Our little drama queen, however, is underfoot and cries incessantly at supper time, like she's starving, until we relent and chop up a small piece of meat and serve it to her on a paper plate.

I don't think it will hurt her msolga - after all the cat biscuits didn't always exist and cats used to live on the tinned stuff alone. The biscuits are good for her teeth but I wouldn't insist. (they can also be bad for their kidneys if they don't drink enough with them )

that cake! Shocked I've turned a little green and sickly looking

Dante only gets dry feed, eats it up in seconds and then searches out Sallydog's bowl so he can eat her dry feed as well.

Vivien, this one's for you...I'm so sorry, you are really a sweet, very nice person who just happened to "step" into my world of black humor.

For everybody else, get a grip.

Oh, but I have been very firm, Deb!
The problem is that she's mighty stubborn! She's been known to hang out till dinner & her meat fix! Evil or Very Mad

Hmmmmm, I'll think about that Vivian.
But it doesn't seem right, somehow .....

Maybe we'll see who can hold out the longest before giving in! Laughing

Ms Poppy has just had her dinner: Tuna strips in some frightfully exotic jelly (according to the packet details). She demolished it in 30 seconds flat! Surprised Shocked
Now she's running, jumping & frolicking up & down the decking at full speed! Up & back, up & back! She's a crazy cat! Laughing

Di, for god sake, get that cat a covered litter pan, with charcoal filter in the top. They need their privacy. Oh, and dog food tends to be bad for the feline urinary tract. Something about ash content.

that is utterly brilliant Diane! .... now where is that smilie of projectile vomiting????? Laughing

If you can get mspoppy to eat the biscuits you are a better woman than me msolga! Rosie steadfastly refuses tinned cat food except as a desperate last resort Rolling Eyes ..... she holds out for her chicken and cat biscuits.

so...here's my latest episode of aging cats.

Just brought Sugar (my 17 yr old tripod cat) back from vet for a big weight loss problem (lost 40% of her weight now under 6 lbs from about 9.5 or 10 lbs). She saw Paris Hilton on TV and figured that she'd copy her style.

I've had her since she was 7 weeks old. She's very much a part of my every day and seen me through all my life changes. She saw me through my minor heart surgery and help heal me, along with Bonkers, my other cat (from earlier in this thread). Who is almost normal again after his congestive heart failure.

Back to her medical emergency: They poked, prodded and explored her, which she took quite well. The blood tests will come back soon and I'll know more on Monday. the vet's and my suspicion is kidney area, considering her advanced age and the symptoms. The good thing is that upon the vet's touching part of exam, they can't feel any unusual areas around her organs -- no swelling or obvious growths -- a good sign. Now for the blood work results. Hope it's treatable. Poor little critter...she looks to me to solve the problem. I'm doing my best.

If you're so inclined, send her healing enregy and/or say a prayer for her.

Ragman, Nisse, Mysan and I are sending energy and hope that things will turn out well for Sugar. 17 years is a respectable age and I hope you will enjoy each other's company for a couple of more years.

Diane, that is AWFUL!!!!!!! But I still love you :-)

I was in Denver for one whole week and missed my human and cat family very much. So I bought a can of Newman's Own Cat Food to bring back to the cats - not Stefan - he got Reeses Peanut Butter Cups... Nisse did not even try it. But Mysan ate the whole can all by herself!

Gee, Diane. Thanks so much for the charming photo. Just what a goil needs to brighten her day.

msolga, Why does it matter whether Poppy eats canned food or dry food? Am I missing something. A bit of knowledge after all these years of cat cohabitation? All my cats have always eaten both. Patty preferred dried food but would eat the canned. Miranda preferred the canned but would eat some dry. And Mikey is not finicky. He'll eat anything--and huge quantities of it. You wouldn't believe his daily intake of food. (He's a big guy.)

Ragman, Sending positive thoughts and hoping for a good outcome.

Had a brief glimmer of hope that Mikey might finally have figured out something. For 12 1/2 years I have my milk and cookies every night. For 12 1/2 years, Mikey gets some of the milk before I do. For 12 1/2 years, I pour the milk into the glass and put it on the table in front of the tv set. Mikey can access the milk from the arm of the sofa. And every night for 12 1/2 years, Mikey gets all agitated that he can't get to the milk. I usually have to coax him, remind him, and occasionally put him on the arm of the couch. Two nights ago, he lept onto the arm of the couch while I was pouring. A breakthrough, I thought. Nope, a temporary lapse into intelligence. Short-lived. Last night he couldn't figure it out again.

I've sometimes wondered whether this is some kind of weird feline way of Mikey to try to get me to put the milk somewhere else. Not gonna happen. So we play our nightly milk game. What a big lug.

I'm sending my most positive & caring thoughts to you & Sugar.

"Be well, Sugar, be well ....."

Someone (even if they're "just" a critter) whose been through so much with you & has helped you through the dark times (I know!) deserves a long, good life. Very Happy

So, be well, Sugar, you deserve it!

Roberta, according to my trusty vet, it does matter. He (now heading for 80 years of age) reckons that the reason that cats live longer these days is because of enormous improvements in the quality of the (commercial) food that's now available to them. I really want this cat (Poppy) to be healthy after the ongoing illnesses & weaknesses of Rats & Flatty (both adopted "rescued" cats.) An important part of being healthy is having a good varied diet, not just meat/protein. The "good" dried foods contain a lot of the necessary nutrients that critters need. I'm looking for a balance here between meat, dried & tinned. Maybe I'm being a bit anxious, but I really don't want to go through the horrors again in a hurry. I really, really want a healthy cat!

msolga, thanks for the food info. I just assumed, lo these many years, that dry and canned were the things for cats to eat--more as for the variety than for the nutrition. I guess it's both.

You may be the only person to ever refer to Mikey as smart. I have occasionally wondered whether he was playing dumb. That he's actually more intelligent than he lets on. Manipulative? Maybe. Smart? I don't think so.

Surprised

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

That was quick, Roberta! Surprised

Hmmm, maybe I'm over-anxious about these things, given the history of my/our adopted boy cats? I loved them all dearly & the illnesses were heart-breaking. (But you know that, yes?) Now, with yet another rescued cat (girl this time!) I really don't want to go through all that again in a hurry! The very idea ...!Sad Shocked

.. & of course Mikey is smart! You know that, Roberta! I mean, you are very smart & life with this critter is a battle of wills & intelligence! (Who will win? Who will get the upper hand? Laughing ) I find the contest fascinating. Wouldn't life be dull without this constant challenge, Roberta? Very Happy
