I would like to ask the pussycat people a question about the behaviour of our new cat.
Number 2 son has a new kitten that sometimes will react in absolute shock and horror when it sees a family member that is has accepted in the past. It is never the same person, but it has been here for months now and it will sometimes react as though one person is unrecognisable. I am worried it might have a serious head problem but I can not afford a brain scan or anything complicated. Any suggestions ??

Cats have no word in their language for "HAT" . They think everything associated with a face, is part of the face. Ive had cats run from me when I wear a ski mask (My dogs wont bat an eye) . Soon as I take off the ski mask the cats are all over me to pet em.

@Ionus,
I have a great suggestion I did NOT think of myself... Omsigdavid did (thank you, Cat Whisperer)!

Have each family member feed the kitteh something really delightful, like, say, cooked chicken, or a bit of tuna. A few goes at this, and kitteh should be verra happy to see each family member.

@tsarstepan,
There's a hard and fast rule, y'know, about cat toys/furniture: The more money you spend on the item, the less likely it is your cat will use it.

Given that this item is likely very expensive, I'm guessing most cats would run away screaming from it.

A cardboard box under the glass table would prolly work better. Or maybe a paper bag.

Thanks famerman, borriskitten..I willl certainly try those suggestions. It is a bit of a worry as it is a very likeable personality in every way..just this one freakish piece of occasional behaviour.

@Ionus,
Number 2 son (it is his cat) asked the old folks home where he got it and it had been mistreated by children who found it abandoned. The old folks took it in and found it a good home.

The methods you suggested are certainly working, it is now far less skittish around any of us. Your suggestion of kindness was the treatment even though we didnt know the illness then. I am just glad I can get out of this without having to pay for a cat scan.

Thanks again people, and I hope it wasnt too much of a downer for the regulars in this thread, but I am sure all would agree on the importance of helping a kitten in distress.

@neko nomad,
Let me offer some advice. When a cat presents its self for a chest massage like that, do not - and I mean do not reach over its head. They can make it very hard to get away in one piece.

@tsarstepan,
It works with every cat I have ever known. Reach in front of their faces and their front paws wrap around your wrists, and the claws extend. I think it's an uncontrolable reflex.

@roger,
Oh that's nothing... I've been scratched by cats before. I even handled a cat who was at the time stalking her prey (a songbird perhaps that being her favorite target). When the cats I known wrap the front paws around my wrist, there also was the accompanied play biting as well. No more serious then play biting from a dog.
