From a pure spectators point of view, it would be interesting to see Hillary go up against Condi.

I don't see Rudi drawing much support from the Southern, Midwestern, or Western states, his last name alone will hurt him, especially in the very rural areas.

McCain, always seems about an inch away from going postal.

I'll work for Rudy. He did get good name recognition with his leadership during 911. That will reel Bubba in, but gay marriage may push him back...

I'd work for Condi, too. But, I think she likes to be the power behind the throne, rather than on it.

Love prognosticatin' wid ya!!

2 packs a day-You may be right about Rudi and the fact that his name would hurt him in the rural areas.

But then what chance would Barack Obama have?

could be. bet he's a real force of nature when he gets p.o.ed.

the name, i.e. ethnic, thing may or may not be a problem for a candidate these days. the ethnic make up of the country as expanded beyond recognition of what it was even a short 40 years ago.

as long as the next prez isn't named bush or clinton, at least it will be something different.

have you ever heard of a california republican named richard riordan ?

well... he wanted to run, but the state party blew him off in favor of bill simon, a pro-lifer.

i can't remember what the story was. but there was some deal between richard and ahnoldt about riordan not running against herr S. so riordan announced his availablity. and then woops! ahnoldt announces.

obviously simon was not the right candidate for california.

and really, ahnoldt was elected on being "not gray davis". a lot of people that insisted that i vote for arnie are complaining about him to me now.

sorry. can't help but rub it in. i voted no recall. davis got blamed for a lot of crap that was caused by enron like the price gouging on energy. but, if he had let the black outs keep happening, people woulda hated him for that too. see? no good deed goes unpunished. hahaha!

anyway, riordan was a really good mayor. he began the turn around here. i actually wish he would have stayed on. since our street is only 2 blocks outside of the l.a.city limits, we got some benefits from his efforts.

still hopin' he'll run for guvner. and perhaps prez.

works cheap too. dollar a year! Laughing

The problem with McCain is that he is not looked on favorably by Republicans. In a recent poll he was selected by only 4% of Republicans as the person they would most like to see running as a Republican candidate in 2008.

I think this is true. He has enjoyed wide appeal among Moderates in both parties, but not so much with the average Republican, and the popularity he had with Repulicans likely plummeted with his Gang of 14 episode.

Well, I don't think it's true at all. I'm curious about Mele's source in fact, because I sure cant find anything remotely like it.

For example, in all the polls from the last three months listed on pollingreport.com that asked Republican and Republican-leaning voters about the Republican nomination, between 22% and 30% of them said they preferred McCain.

In all of them McCain came up as the first, shared first or second most mentioned preference. Only Giuliani, and in just one of those polls, Rice, showed up scoring in the same ballpark.

nimh-- I am my own source on this. I feel like I know the general mood of the party, even when I don't necessarily agree with them. Sometimes, these things take a while to show up in polling. Nobody has hit McCain as a traitor hard, but wait until primaries. You'll see what I mean.

The Gang of 14 thing will have ramifications. People consider that he has screwed the party on more than one occasion. He's given ideological loyalists lots of ammunition.

But, as always, we'll eventually see.

Giuliani tops polls.

Mentions McCain haters in the party.

WHAT DO YOU CALL A SQUISHY REPUBLICAN?
By Michelle Malkin ยท April 24, 2005 01:55 PM
In the MSM thesaurus, you call him a "maverick:"

Yes, boys and girls, time for the regular round-up of fawning references to the MSM's favorite non-Democrats: "maverick" Republicans.

Scared Monkey blog:

A group of 14 Senators, 7 Republicans and 7 Democrats, reached an agreement to avoid the rule change that would have eliminated filibustering of Judicial nominees. Democrats agree to vote for cloture on only three nominees. Filibusters will continue, but only under "extraordinary" circumstances. How many extraordinary circumstances do you think we'll have over the next three years? The Senate Leadership and President Bush have been sold down the river by these seven Republicans.

This so called "deal" was a retreat from earlier claims that Democrats were willing to approve five of the seven filibustered nominees. Talk about bad negotiating tactics - McCain and company actually lost ground when the GOP held all the cards.

John McCain may dream of running for President again in 2008 but this, in my view cements his demise. He'll be lucky to get 3% of the GOP primary vote. This is a sad day for the Republic.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This isn't the entire Republican party, but I really believe McCain has quite an uphill battle because of this and a few other stances, opposed to the general will of the GOP.
I don't necessarily agree with the comments, but I do think they'll be a factor. Wouldn't call him a traitor.
Arizona Republican Assembly Votes Unanimously to Censure Senator McCain
By Dennis Durband
SCOTTSDALE -- No, Donald Trump, U.S. Senator John McCain has not been fired. On Saturday, the Arizona Republican Assembly (ARA) voted unanimously during its annual state convention to censure Arizona?s senior senator.
McCain has seriously alienated his conservative base in the 21 st century. However, he has greatly enamored himself with liberals and he easily won re-election in November with his new liberal support base. The conservatives who make up the ARA membership have had enough of what they consider a betrayal by McCain and they took advantage of their annual resolution ritual to take action against the liberal metamorphosis of the presidential hopeful.
To clarify, are you talking about the Southern Republican Leadership Conference held recently, which gives sort of the mood of fellow Republican leaders in regard to the best possible presidential candidates for their party.
McCain does not do well at all in their straw poll between themselves. Frist, George Allen, and Romney came out looking like fair possibilities.
I apologize if this has already been posted but I missed it.
Thanks, okie.
It's already showing.
You know he threw his support to Bush, because he knew he'd score very low.
I'm not down on him, but I know he's wounded himself with Republicans. He's one that could possibly win the Presidency, but may not survive the primaries.
