Yep. It's true. Yours very own, littlek has talked me into it. It's a bunch of gay guys, too. Littlek saw their 'Death of a Saleslady', which was a riot, apparently. Now they're auditioning for Cleopatra, a 70s pop/rock musical with lots of dancing and stuff.
Now I have been in theater for many years - but that was since I was 6 till I was about 16 or 17. I have tapdanced for four years (would have to dust that off a bit, though when I pulled out my old shoes today, I could still do some racket) and I danced. So the movement part I'm not that worried about.
They will, however want me to sing. I know a good cabaret song, but in Czech. What if they have a problem with it being in Czech? I won't have time to learn anything new well enough, and I'm already dying of stage fright. Why did I ever call to sign up?
So...any suggestions for an easy melodic cabaret song that's famous enough that I would know, but not banale. Preferably something light and funny..... OOOOOOOFFFFF!
OMG, that is sooooo you! You would be perfect for stage.
Of course you have probably finished the audition by now. How did you get on?

How is your German, Dagmaraka? I am sure you can do a perfect Marlene Dietrich!
Quote:Lili Marleen
1.Hinter der Kaserne,
vor dem großen Tor
steht eine Laterne,
und steht sie noch davor.
Da wollen wir uns wiedersehn,
bei der Laterne woll'n wir stehn,
wie einst, Lili Marleen, wie einst, Lili Marleen.
2.Unsre beiden Schatten
sah'n wie einer aus;
daß wir so lieb uns hatten,
das sah man gleich daraus.
Und alle Leute soll'n es sehn
wenn wir bei der Laterne stehn,
Wie einst, Lili Marleen, wie einst, Lili Marleen.
3.Deine Schritte kennt sie,
deinen schönen Gang,
alle Abend brennt sie,
doch mich vergaß sie lang.
Und sollte mir ein Leid geschehn
Wer wird bei der Laterne steh'n?
Mit dir, Lili Marleen, wie einst, Lili Marleen.
4.Aus dem tiefen Raume,
aus der Erde Grund
hebt sich wie im Traume
dein verliebter Mund.
Wenn sich die späten Nebel drehn,
Wer wird bei der Laterne stehn?
Mit dir, Lili Marleen, wie einst, Lili Marleen.
oops, it's tomorrow 22nd!
Okay, I am seeing you as Lili Von Schtupp (Madeleine Kahn) from Blazing Saddles.
You could sing "I'm NOT tired" but speed up her song and have a chair permanently attached to your butt, even while you're tap-dancing. I'd give good money to see that!
Yikes! Two people who see you as Miss Dietrich!!!!
(miss dietrich, dressed in a leather bikini)
No that's not a good song of war and soldiers...
Dag, how about "money, money makes the world go around..."
from the musical Cabaret?
Without knowing, I think your voice would be perfect for that.
...and congratulations, I'm sure the part will be yours!
haha, my german...well, i could fake it, but i wouldn't necessarily know what i'm singing about.
my voice? hmmmm. it could be slightly jazzy i suppose - think "I never talk to Strangers" - duet of Tom Waits with ??? on Asylum Years.
Or what's her name singing with Velvet Underground - I'm Sticking With You.
I thought of those two...but the first is a duet (and hard to do for one person) and the second is too simple, sorta childish.
Now I'm thinking "Black Boys" from "Hair...? (Black boys are delicious...chocolate flavored skin. Black boys are so damn yummy, they satisfy my tummy.... gay guys might like the idea...?)
or somthing from Hair... Good morning Starshine? That I almost know...would have to memorize it. Actually might be better than a cabaret song...as it is supposed to be a 70s rock/pop musical. hmmm?
Glad I saw the part about the gay guys before suggesting you show them a little leg.
but there will be an excellent selection of wigs!
OK, it's settled. I just tried singin the Black Boys, and it sits perfectly with me. Just have to memorize it. (Plus the lyrics are soooo truuueeee). What do youze think?
Black boys are delicious
Chocolate flavored love
Licorice lips like candy
Keep my cocoa handy
I have such a sweet tooth
When it comes to love
Once I tried a diet
Of quiet, rest, no sweets
But I went nearly crazy
And I went clearly crazy
Because I really craved for
My chocolate flavored treats
Black boys are nutritious
Black boys fill me up
Black boys are so damn yummy
They satisfy my tummy
I have such a sweet tooth
When it comes to love
Black black black black black black black black
Black boys
Dag, is there anything you don't do? Have you ever danced naked on the polar cap with frenzied polar bears??
I just have this gut feeling that you have.
That signature of hers aint just whistlin' dixie!
so..... a few questions.
most of the group is gay guys and they do flamboyant makeup and such.
Do I want to dress up for the audition, or better not be presumptious and just come 'as is'? Perhaps just a bit more of makeup than usual?
Do I bring my tapdance shoes? I guess won't hurt to bring them.
Do I have to bring workout clothes? They said they will 'try out movements' - so I guess I better not be in high heels and miniskirt.
I have never auditioned in my life, although I was in a theater as a kid for years. Any tips on what I should do/ should never ever do?
I have no suggestions.. but I hope -HOPE-HOPE everything goes very well and you get the part.
Good luck !
or break a leg.. wich ever one is better ;-)
Shouldn't this be on the procrastination thread?
Yup.
Thought so.
I can feel the vibe from here.
i'm not sure... this is something i wanted to come back to for years. kris kicked me into calling, and i'm very grateful. if nothing comes out of it, the audition itself will be an interesting experience.
and that writing that needs to get done ...

(perhaps you could go sick...there is still time)
