I'll have to post those pictures a little bit later, Lash. I've found them, but now I have to meet someone.

I'll be back.

Oh yes, Lash. Lots of good hiking at Gordon. So good that even the hills had names, all of which are sadly unprintable.

Russian Gothic for lilk.

Lilk-- I'm not in Athens yet. I'm gathering some info in case I move. I applied to UGA for the Fall. They won't send me a letter until April. So, I may wind up going to Georgia Southern. Meh.

Best deli as in buying a deli sandwich... best hole in the wall, local-ly bar... best art gallery... best hamburger... best brunch with funky menu...best street for antiquing or funky jewelry?

Anything useful would be GREATLY appreciated. You are so helpful!!!

I hope your brother's feeling better about last night. You didn't say much, but I felt for him, and you, because you were feeling for him...

Hmmm.... I'm not so good with 'the best ____ is ____' type statements. Athens is a very small little town with a generally friendly population. The down-town which huddles up against the Uni is very very small. The rest is sort of spread out along the main roads. It would take you about an hour to walk ever foot of sidewalk in the little downtown.

I'd try antiquing at the JJ flea market.

I'd eat at The Grill - an old-style dinner. I'd brunch at The Grit (can't get much funkier than that, but beware it's a vegitarian restaurant) ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/TheGrit ). There are two southern style corn bread and sweet potato mash type places - one is on East Broad St ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/FiveStarDayCafe ) and the other is on N Hull street ( can't find it, maybe it's gone ). And great BBQ from JB ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/JBsRibsAndBbq ). Sushi and Japanese food ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/AthensSushiBarUtage ), more funky vegi food ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/BluebirdCafe )

Hmmm... the above is confusing. Sorry.

Bars I love, in no particular order: Manhattan ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/ManhattanCafe ), lunch paper ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/LunchPaper ), 40-watt ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/40WattClub ), Caledonia ( http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants/CaledoniaLounge )

Well.... here's a link to the source: the bar and restaurant guide at the Flagpole. http://flagpole.com/guide/restaurants

Thanks so much. I'm going to Athens to get on a waiting list for an apartment in a week or so, and I'm going to hit a few of the places you mentioned.

Nothing is better than talking to someone who's been there. I just wanted your opinion---as far as the "best" thing goes. Thanks so much for all the ideas.

My daughter is a vegetarian (chickies and seafood included) so she may really love some of the restaurants you mentioned!!! I can go veggie occasionally...

You're great!!

You must MUST go to The Grit. Like the blurb I linked to above says, everybody eats there. It's that good. I still crave their food, 6.5 years later.

Ha!

I have lived here most of my life. I was just starting a Day Tripper guide, because I never go to any of these places--and I've NEVER been to Athens--so, I am relying on your expert advice for my upcoming trip there.

I've never even been to the Indian sites.

I swear I'm going soon.

Macon Ga is an interesting city to visit, too, while you're visitng the mounds. It's a bit of a ghost town with empty store fronts and boarded up houses (or it was when I was there 8 years ago), but the architecture and the general feel of the city is pretty cool. And, it has a gorgeous cemetery.
