Athens, GA. Seat of UGA, historicaly significant in the civil war and old south architecture, wonderful nightlife, great food, cheap food and lodging.

I wish I'd gotten out more, when I lived there, so I could be more useful. Are you headed to GA?
When didja live here?
I'm here now. May be going to UGA in the Fall! <giggle>
I lived in rocking Athens!
Hooray!!! I'll have a zillion questions!! What were some of the best nightspots?? See any really good local bands...?
(You are now a repository of fabulous, vital info.)
OH, I've been to Georgia, too. Sure wish I had some good snapshots of scenic Ft. Gordon in the summer.
Fond memories of Okefenokee Swamp, too. Had a car break down 20 miles south of Waycross. Heavy fog and freezing rain.
Aw, geez, Lash - good bands? Just thousands of them! Hmmm.... I know that several bars I liked are out of business or very very different than when I was there.
Get a Flagpole newspaper for band info and club info.
I know the owner of Caledonia. They play good, unknown bands and sometimes locals. My ex-boyfriend and his brother do sound there. The 40-watt club is a great old standby.
Bands..... well, I dunno. You might really enjoy the Drive-By Truckers. They are alabama country, but their lyrics are a riot.
There are many bands and many musicians. Many bands are made up of musicians from various bands playing together for one night only.
I'm still in touch with one or two friends down there, what kind of music/club are you interested in?
Making alcohol and bs pay.
Rog! When were you at the Okefenokee?
Lilk, it sounds fabulous. I like blues, bluegrass, the spectrum of rock, alternative (really, what IS that?), emo, screamo, ... I guess it would be easier to say what I don't like.
Country and rap.
Probably in 1963, or thereabouts.
A lovely botanical garden with inside tropicals, located in the UGA pastures:

There's a great, short hike around a man made recreation lake and closed in dog pens (if you have a dog) at the Sandy Creek Park:

My absolutely favorite restaurant is The Grit (it's health/vegitarian food). The JJ ouside of town is a large and interesting, weekly flea market.
Rog--
Did you live around here then? Is there a Life of Roger thread around somewhere? I don't know anything about you.
You're a bean counter...you live in New Mexico,...you're practically perfect...that's all I know.
Lash - I'd check out Caledonia. And, if you see a guy with a mass of salt and pepper curly hair and irish eyes at the sound board, tell him I said hello.

MY opinion.

Look at the pretty Russian gothic painting I found!!
ooohhh, where'd ya find that?
