Have You Gotten Your Flu Shot Yet?

Reply Tue 5 Nov, 2002 04:20 pm
Has everybody gotten his/her flu shot yet? Flu can be a nasty illness, and can leave you open to more serious infection, like pneumonia. In my opinion, as a lay person, everybody should get a shot. It is especially important if you have any chronic illness.

Flu causes not only a lot of misery to the sufferer, but lost productivity on the job. There is a website:

http://www.findaflushot.com/findaflushot.cfm where you can find out where you can get a flu shot in your area.

Another site, www.flustar.com brings you the latest news about the incidence of flu in your area.

Joanne- Don't wait too long. I understand that it takes 2-3 weeks for the shots to take effect.

OK am going to log off and see where the are giving the shots locally. I cannot go through that again. The last time I had real flu was the one in 1958, I was very sick and remember it well, but I was also very young and do not recall having a long recovery period.

Must get flu shot.... thanks for the reminder. Some Qs, though: What about resistance? Does one's body build a resistance to the strain via the vaccination? And, is my Dr correct in saying that there is one new flu every year and it always comes from Asia.

Everybody in my family gets a flu shot every year. Have to because my daughter's diabetes and my allergies to so many antibiotics put us both at high risk. We got ours about 2 weeks ago, and the nurse who gave me mine said that this year there are 5 different strains of flu that the vaccine is supposed to protect against. Cost for us: Mr. Matrix got his for free at work, my son and I didn't want to wait for the doctor's office to get the vaccine in (would have been free) so we got our shots at Costco for $15 ea. My daughter got hers for free at her doctor's office. None of us had any adverse reactions at all-not even sore arms. Something I've noticed this year is that most places (except Costco) are charging at least $3 to $5 more per shot this year than they were last year. Don't know why because the vaccine is more readily available this year than it has been in the recent past. I also got a pnumonia vaccine last year-most people only need to get one of those in a lifetime, but because of my high risk status, I've been told to get one every 5 years.

little k...

The flu does come from Asia. It originates in the chickens and pigs, and that's where the people catch it. From there, it travels around the world and everyone else gets the opportunity to catch it. The CDC has people stationed in Asia year-round watching to see which strain(s) will show up next, and when those people report back to the CDC that's when the vaccines start being produced. There's a whole thing on the CDC's Influenza Homepage on the process...It's kinda interesting, and kind of scary to read about. As far as your body building a resistance to the flu...The vaccine will give you resistance to the specific flu it is designed for, but only for a few months, then the resistance wears off...and, year to year the flu(s) vary, so you always need to get revaccinated to stay safe.

Here's the link to the CDC's Influenza Homepage. You can track where the flu has struck so far in the U.S. and around the world, and they have answers to virtually any question you could think of when it comes to the flu.

Click here and follow the link that says Current U.S. flu reports, then go to the bottom of that page, it will show you the most recent map of where the flu has hit in the U.S. It's color coded.

Matrix! Thanks so much for the info! Now, if I can get a couple healthy days in a row, I'll go get my shot.
