Interesting - and, really, quite telling - that so many of those most vociferously in opposition to the war in Iraq have neither experience of war nor of uniformed service, and that when one with such experience echoes their sentiments, that one is lionized and held as paragon, while the millions of others sharing actual martial experience, with or without having seen combat, in no way endorse and with great frequency repudiate such sentiment.

There's an irony there, reflected well in this:

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag.

Fr. Daniel O'Brien, USMC

Something else, apart from The Marine Corps, of which I'm proud, is that we live in a society which holds sacred the right of free speech. I think too it is good war is so reviled, and arouses such antagonistic emotion. It is something which must never achieve universal popularity; only so long as there are folks who are willing and able to publically protest is there anything worth fighting for.

FREE SPEECH? Then why was the link removed by the moderator in BlueFlame's post, above?

Probably because it was a link that was promoting an event, and asking for attendance. I don't think any site allows promoting events on another site, this one included.

I'm pretty sure Anon's got that one figured out.

From the TERMS:

Quote:
You may not post links to your site or use Able2Know for promotional purposes (both commercial and non-commercial) unless you have been granted an exception by the site administrators. The determination of what consitutes a violation of this rule is determined exclusively by Able2Know.

Besides that, the Constitutional Guarantee of Free Speech unambiguously entails that the owners and administrators of a web forum, or any just about other media, are perfectly free to decide and enforce acceptable content rules pretty much as they please; other than as otherwise contrary to law, nobody can tell them what they must or must not convey to the public. This website just plain ain't big on members advertising anything. And anyone is perfectly free to live with that and participate here, or see that as reason enough to stay away - its a free-to-use website, hosted (at considerable expense to its owner) in a free country.

Timber, you would be free to post a link in your profile, and then a little note saying 'check my profile,' no?

That's a PM, though.

Hmm, I could have sworn that there used to be a 'www' button in the profile.

Anybody can list a "Favorite Website" in their profile, and it'll be linked via the http://www.able2know.com/forums/templates/Able2Know/images/lang_english/icon_www.gif button at the bottom of the member's posts, but if that website has been blacklisted for spamming, it'll render as "AUTOSPAMFILTER" whether typed out in a post or converted to a link - and as that implies, there's no human intervention involved; a blacklisted text string comes out as AUTOSPAMFILTER if its on the A2K server. And regardless whether your "Favorite Website" is cool or not, I don't think it'd be a a good idea to post anything along the lines of "Go to the website in my profile or click the "www" button in my posts for more info"; members advertising for themselves or for their pet causes and/or projects or products pretty much is frowned on hereabouts.

Timber,
What causes a website to be "blacklisted?

Generally spamming, though illegal activity can get a site blacklisted too - there are a buncha blacklists available, and many web hosts and ISPs subscribe to one or more and/or maintain their own.

"If you want to impress me, go to Baghdad."

Dear Michael Moore:

I must say that you are always on point. I am a soldier serving in Iraq and till this day we still don't know why we are here.

I sit and watch television and the bull **** that our leaders are feeding to the people on a daily basis. How can you be a President and spend over 800 billions of dollars destroying and rebuilding another country when we need help in our own country? How do you live with yourself knowing that innocent soldiers are dying every day just for you?

Majority of the troops here don't even have missions, all they do is check people identification cards going into the PX or Hajji Bazaars or cooks working in airports or laundry room because they have civilian caterers to work in the dinning facilities. We are separated from our family, kids, husbands, wives and friends for a year just for the white house to look good. So our leaders can say "Yes we were the ones that destroyed and rebuild this country spending over 800 billions of dollars and we have veterans that have served their country, lost their legs, arms and their lives to be homeless, eating in shelters and no one gives a dam.

But what's really gets under my skin is that we are over here fighting for $250.00 extra on our pay check for hazard pay or 225 dollars extra for being away from your families and you pay athletes, entertainers and singers billions of dollars to perform. If it was not for people like us that provide that freedom and give up our lives for that freedom that why are we paid so much less to be in harms way?

Oh yeah, I forgot they raised the life insurance from 250,000 to 400,000 when I die that will really benefit me a lot.

Mr. Bush, why are you wondering why people are getting out of the military regardless of the bonus money that you are throwing their way and why are you forcing soldiers to stay in the army past their time without any say so? I prefer Clinton any day, true he was getting his freak on in the White House, but who hasn't and if they said they didn't they would be lying.

This is the worst leadership in the history of leading and to get on national television telling lies about "They are doing so much over here" is pathetic. How would you know if you only visit places that are not in any type of danger? What is going on in Kuwait? Nothing. If you want to impress me, go to Baghdad where there is suicide bombings everyday where soldiers are dying. Not where you can give a concert and feel good about yourself? You should have known that if you and your brother manipulate the voting system that will stop you from doing the same to the world.

To be honest a lot of military personnel do not have any thing good to say about this Commander in Chief, he has proven to the world that he is truly the biggest fraud that the world has seen.

Thanks, amigo-

Watch it, soldier. You're gonna piss off the jarheads whose motto is DIE FOR OIL.......or maybe DIE FOR BUSH'S HONOUR......or perhaps it is JUST DIE, BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE TOLD TO DO.

Hey- Bushie is getting ready to blitz Iran next. I hear that New Orleans and the surrounding storm ridden areas are still waiting to be rebuilt, but the $$ has gone to fight a 'war' that should never have begun.

Thank you for your letter, soldier. The soldiers who speak up are the ones with the guts, not the braindead sheep who just go along with Bush and his cabal's stupid war game. You guys who signed up for the National Guard thought you'd be guarding the nation, eh? What a complete sham.

I hope Bushie doesn't sleep well at night thinking about you guys over there, but I suspect he's too stupid to actually get what's happening there, or anywhere. Good luck and hope you make it home soon.

I'm going camping with a soldier serving in Iraq on leave this weekend. If he brings it up I'll talk to him about it but if he doesn't i'm not saying anything. It's his weekend.

But I do know a hardcore killer marine that calls Bush a traitor.

I haven't been to Iraq, I went to a different war, a long time ago. My son, however, has been to Iraq - 3 times, and he is there now. He's a Marine, too, as I was. He thinks differently than does Anderson, and so do I. One of the things my kid thinks about, and worries about, is that America might be persuaded to abandon the Iraqis just as she was persuded to abandon the Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Laotians a generation ago.

News flash: going into Vietnam was a horrible mistake; a mistake that resulted in the deaths of untallied millions. It blows my mind that forty years later there are people who still haven't realized this. The entire world understands this except for an isolated segment of one country - America.
