I've seen this sort of stuff up close. I get real nervous.
Littlek, I just found this thread. You have a fine eye, delicate and sensitive. I love photos like yours of the unusual and small easily missed places.
Reyn, they're honey bees - honey bees are very docile.
Diane - thanks! I like to shoot photos that show things from a different perspective and/or to show where nature meets (and my favorite is where it overcomes) civilization.

Tell that to my sense of fear for anything that can sting!
Like the video I just posted elsewhere, these images aren't wonderful, mostly they are fun..... from today's whale watch.
Besides Tong the humpback mamma, I have some more recent shots....

Kris, I really like this photo.
I resized it to 600 x 497. Better, eh?
Thanks, Reyn, I was in a hurry last night.....

Has anyone played a game called 'michigan rummy', 'liverpool', or 'that a$$hole game'? I imagine there are more versions of this game. But, in effect you play a series of hands. First hand you lay down 2 sets of 3-of-a-kind, second hand is 1 set and 1 run (4 in a row of one suit), third hand is 2 runs, 4th hand is 3 sets, 5th hand is 2 sets and 1 run, 6th 2 runs and 1 set, then 3 runs...... it's fun, but viscious!
Baby seal pup down at the local little harbor. We were very concerned about it's welfare. It was tiny and seemingly skinny - we thought it's mom had abandoned it. We called wildlife management people of various sorts and eventually one told us we could make signs to post on the beach. Just after we got back to the beach, the management people came and yelled at us for being too close (taking photos). They checked out the situation and said that this lil pup was weened before 2 months and on his or her own. But agreed that the pup looked a bit thin. THey said they'd put it on a 24-hour watch. Then the little guy had either enough sun or too much human campanionship, because he flopped on off to sea.
How far away are you from the seal when you took the pic?
waaaaaay too close - about 8 feet. <don't tell anyone>
Some of my nephew who just happened to be wearing just the right colors....

No telephoto on your camera?
There's a little zoom, but not much.
That's too bad. I've got a 12x zoom on mine and have found it to come in handy when you just can't get in close.
My wife's camera (which was given to her) has the same thing and finds it somewhat frusterating getting animal shots, etc. Sometimes you just can't get close enough to make the pic look like something and not scare off the subject matter.
