Very nice pictures, Jespah. Well worth the wait. I definitely want to go there the next time I am in Boston.
Re the Bonsai from 1737. 270 some years. Imagine, if you can, being the person who decided that it was time to make one little snip after, perhaps, years of contemplation. Imagine taking that action: 1/4" right there. Awesome.

Hey, I know you Bahstonians don't like to plan ahead, but I'm probably going to attend a wedding in Medford 7/25.

I would love to meet all of y'all or as many as we can pull together. I'll post more details when I have them.
Ok, the weekend is approaching, but it's filling up with wedding events. I'm flying into Boston on Friday 7/24 at 1:45. I'm staying at a hotel in Medford. I've been invited to the rehearsal dinner Friday nite (Medfuh), the wedding is at 1:30 Saturday (W. Medfuh), and the reception is immediately following (Malden). I leave Sunday at 4:50.

Saturday nite would work for us to meet up. (How long can I stay at a reception where I only know the groom and his parents?) I'm guessing that my friends (the groom's parents) may want to get together on Sunday, if they're still standing, so Saturday evening is probably the best bet. Although if that doesn't happen, maybe I could see some of you for brunch/lunch Sunday too?

I haven't reserved a rental car yet, but I should, don't you think? I can't imagine that public transportation/taxis would work for all that running around.

@mac11,
My cousins lived in Malden and I met them there, in when, let's say 1950.

Please rescue mac11 -- I'll just say authoritarially that that is a Malden perquisite and I have some old dibs on that.

@ossobuco,
My eighty year old cousin might back me up, or not - we've lost touch with my moving. But I'll throw cousin vibes for Mac meeting a2kers.

@ossobuco,
Ah, I'm not sure you need to rent a car. Maybe, and maybe not.

@mac11,
I would rent a car if I were you, Mac. Medford and Malden are accessible by public transportation but they're far enough away from the center of things to make it a hassle. Unfortunately, I'll be in Hawaii on those dates. But maybe we'll meet at the Austin get-together early September.

I would definitely rent a car; you're kind of off in pub tran spindly arm land, not too close to much, close enough so that you'd have to change to get most cool places and that's just plain annoying.

Well.

Today we are actually having a mini (how mini?) gathering in that RP, Thomas and I are running the Artesani Park 5K, along with 2 of my diet buddies from Spark People. http://www.3craceproductions.com/RacePages/ArtesaniPark5KMap.htm
http://www.3craceproductions.com/RacePages/AP5KMap.jpg

So forgive me if I'm not in planning mode right now.

Anyway, yes! July 25th! YES! Of course we are up for it.

Do you have any specific idea of what you might want to do? Would you be in formal clothes after the wedding, or do you want to grab time to change? It doesn't really matter, you'd more likely be more comfortable after the latter but if time is short of course that's understandable.

Lots of restaurants around here that are doable while eating healthy, it's really a question of what type of food you prefer. Probably easiest to centerpiece around that. We used to go to Jasper White's Summer Shack a bit; it had the convenience of being near pub tran (Alewife T stop is right there) plus having scads of parking. Relatively cheap seafood, decent food if you don't mind the lobster tank right there. Not my fave place but it is fairly easy.

We've also done Vinny Testa's downtown; that's huge portions, Italian/pseudo-Italian, it's not the greatest Italian place here but it is easy to get to (it's on Boylston Street, I believe) and cheap, plus they can accommodate a large crowd. Dietwise, it's fair to middling, portions are enormous. Hmm.

Depending on how close the sites are, cabs may be a cheaper option than car
rental. I live in the area so I'm pretty familiar with Malden and Medford.
If you tell me the addresses (PM if that's more comfortable) I can give you
additional info.

I don't have strong preference on the type of food, really. I've gotten good at finding the healthiest food on any menu.

So wherever you guys think will be the easiest for everyone to get to. You're the experts on what works for these situations.

How was the 5K? I knew you were doing it, Jes, but didn't know that you'd have RP & Thomas for company!

I will probably want to go back and change clothes, unless that's ridiculous re: time & distance, and then y'all will get to see me in my nice clothes. Very Happy

@mac11,
'Twas a good 5K. I'm gonna get spoiled, as I blew away my last time by something like a third. I seriously doubt I'll ever see such a one-time improvement ever again, but it was surely a kick.

@jespah,
Speaking of "kick": Just standing at the finish line and watching Jespah's homestretch was worth the trip. This woman is nothing if not determined.

Far be it from me to pressure Bostonians into planning too far ahead, but ... any suggestions on where to go Saturday evening?

@Region Philbis,
I am unfamiliar with most of those, but I can recommend Pearl St Station.

I would avoid any restaurant with "Tiki" in the name.
Tiki Island is no exception.

Pearl St. Station sounds good, but is it easy for everyone to get to? We don't have to meet in my neck of the woods, if it isn't convenient. As long as I have directions, I'm willing to go anywhere.

(Looking at their main menu, I'm thinking grilled shrimp caesar salad, but wondering what turkey tips might be...)

I can't wait to see you guys!
