What I know as well

(Even special "last minute" sites don't have a lot of rooms, and none "affordable". Crying or Very sad )

I'm well aware this is none of my business, Walter, except I'd love to be there myself.

A house I didn't inherit some long time ago (oh, never mind, that was all of my parents' generation) would've made a nice b + b.

Skipping along, I hope rjb finds quarters... bowing out of where I shouldn't have posted in the first place, dumb re local stuff.

Depends on what you consider affordable. Keep in mind that even when I was in college, over 25 years ago, hotels were already over $100/night. For all of these, I looked at June 3 - 10; your mileage will vary if you want different dates.
  1. At www.boston4less.com - put in your arrive and return dates and sort by price. Boston Bedford Travelodge (not close, but not infinitely far, either) is $79/night.
  2. At www.travelocity.com - again, put in your dates and you'll need the airport code (BOS) and sort by price. They have the same Travelodge at $69/night so I'll wager they may be better than boston4less for other choices as well. When I limited them to Cambridge and sorted by price, they came up with Holiday Inn Express and Suites, but at $211/night.
  3. At www.orbitz.com - I just looked at Cambridge and they came up with a Holiday Inn Express for $128/night.
  4. At www.hotels.com - sorting by price, they came up with the Boston Bedford Travelodge, for $79/night. They also had a B & B tab so I checked that as well but the results were similar. You can also go to a deals tab and I found the Shawmut Inn there. $119/night but the dates are off -- that may be one where you can get a last-minute deal, though. They also showed the College Club of Boston, similar rate but I think it's another last-minute issue.

Anyway, my recommendation is: check the usual sites online and be flexible.

I think it was the Hyatt in downtown Boston I got for something ridiculous like $80 for a night off their site.

I found several options, a couple with last minute price reductions, like the Shawmut and Chandler Inns, for June 6th and 7th. But I forget. Why am I going to Boston?

The Chandler Inn would be an interesting choice. It's a two-minute walk from where I am. I can see part of it from my front windows.

The Chandler Inn, in its present incarnation, is primarily a gay men's residency hotel. I didn't even know they sold transient accommodations. It has a history. Back in the day it was called The Hotel Diplomat and was probably the best-known whorehouse in all of Boston. It's where any cabbie would take you if you asked to be 'fixed up.' (I know only because I used to drive a cab Smile) At some point in the 1980s it changed hands and clientele. The hotel has a charming-looking cocktail lounge called Fritz's. I have never ever seen a woman enter this bar.

RJB - there's nothing to find out. We don't make plans well. We haven't made much of a plan yet. A few pages back there was a plan for one evening to meet at a bar/restaurant in Harvard Square (John Harvard's).

All well and good, Littlek. But I envision Johnboy standing in the middle of Harvard Square screaming "Stella! Stella!" Oops, wrong city, wrong play. How about "Jespah! Jespah!"

When you get to Harvard Square, you will see the "Out-of-Town News",
a newstand in the middle of the square. There'll be an old guy there
wearing a blue baseball cap with "Goodrich" on it. That'll be me. I'll also
have my cell phone with me. I'll send the number to you via PM.

I wish I could be there early enough to scoop people up. But, given my schedule, I'll be there later than most. I'll also offer my cell # to those who think they might need it (via PM).

That day I'm in an all-day work meeting (oof) but will be released at 5 or so, possibly already a little tipsy and undoubtedly speaking corporate. RP and I will probably grab an Inbound Red Line together, might even be early if the T gods are smiling.

Head count!
