I think several of them went on for a while.
Didn't this one stick cos two folk used it as an arena to have a ding dong fight?
Then Occom Bill woke the bastard up.
I think Occom Bill went too far this time.
Good Morning all, 5:17am Texas time.
Yes, yes, I'll admit it, I used the thread to continue a tiff, that I regret because reading it over, it's really old news, just like this thread is....sorry all, sorry I responded, really.....I'm a ding dong.
I think everyone knows what it's like to be the only whatever in a room full of different whatevers....
sorry snood sincerely if you took offense, but in all fairness, you should go back to every single old "_____have gone to far" thread and comment on that also.... seriously....I think if you searched for every one of thoses threads, and attempted to make a grand finale comment on each one, you would quickly see that it was people blowing excess spume off because of the real nastiness of the religion war.
snood....do you think your group is the only one who has jokes made about them......?
I'm polish by heritage....I don't speak the language, have never been there, have no desire to go, don't identify with whatever customs they have going on....yet grew up hearing "dumb Polak" jokes on a daily basis concerning not only how dumb I was, but how dirty I was, how women who are Polish are not only dirty and stupid but sluts as well, and on and on. Also apparantly we are a unsophisicated group whose idea of entertainment is bowling, drinking, and beating their wives.
I hated my last name growing up, because no one could pronounce it, and by saying it, I was announcing to the world that I was one of those above people. On top of that, before someone knew my last name, they assumed by my physical appearance that I belonged to a different ethnic group.
The ethnic group that was the wave of immigrants that arrived right before the major wave of Poles did....the wave of immigrants that previous to that were the ones who were the new kids on the block and given a rough time. So they redoubled the abuse they received on my group.
When I was little, I can remember strangers saying basically to me...."Oh, you're such a cute little_______girl"
I'm not ______, I'm _______
The responses from the adults generally fell into 2 catagories..."Oh, but you LOOK so ______" Like that definately would have been preferable, or "Are you SURE you all_____ and not some______?"
Well, yes, I am sure where all my grandparents were all born.
In a class in college, I had this professor who was something like 1/32 Native American, something like that....I mean a REALLY small part....basically, he was a white guy.
One day when the subject of the wholesale extermination of Indians came up....This doofus made the comment to the entire class..."Well, when MY people were being killed, blah blah blah.....YOUR people were blah blah blah."
During the break, I went up to him and said "While YOUR people were being killed.....MY people where living in a country on the other end of the world, and didn't even know YOUR people, let alone this country, existed"
I've told this before, but I'm so damn proud of her, I'll tell it again...my paternal grandmother came over to this country all by herself when she was 13...she was the oldest of something like 16 kids (maybe 15, sorry she died years ago, and some parts are getting fuzzy as I get older), so her parent were still having kids when she left.
She traveled across Europe and into the US without speaking a word of any other language but her own. She got a job as a mothers helper with another Polish family in Newark, and picked up English from them....
My grandmother grew up on a farm not near any city....so the following is to show how ignorant she was of the world, and the people in it, and basically how she could not possibly had any part in the extermination of any Native Americans.....
She told the story how she was cleaning the side walk, and the basement door of the building opened. A black guy came up the steps, I guess he'd been delivering something. My grandma, now probably 14, had never seen a black before....she went screaming into the house that the devil was coming up from Hell.
I know, from todays eyes, that sounds rediculous, perhaps offensive. However, remember, this was in the 1910's, the world was a smaller place as far as communications.
OK snood, go ahead and make fun of my grandmother, I guess you can count that story as my joke.
Maybe later I'll think of a joke to tell about her sister who died in a concentration camp.
snood, as much as you'd like to believe so, you haven't cornered the market on being oppressed.
It's getting boring here having to make excuses for being one of the privileged white folks. Everyone's got their problems, but you like to think that because you're black, no one elses situations can ever compare to yours. It's like some kind of badge of honor for you to be the representative of the poor oppressed black guy...
well, why don't you go out and do something productive about it.
I mean, it doesn't matter what someone responds to you....like whatever I said above, you're just going to be predictible and say some snotty thing and turn it around and belittle it in every way you can think...
But, I'm beating my head against a brick wall. No one has ever suffered as much as you, and you never tire of reminding everyone.
