and prices are still pretty reasonable. In 5 or 10 years time,
this will be a great area to live.
My real estate friend said that rowhouses on Malcolm X Blvd (Lenox Ave) are going for over 2 mil already. Just the shells. Like these...

Oh, I believe it eoe, that's a pretty big building too,
but these here
http://www.ronsaari.com/stockImages/nyc/harlemStriversRow.jpg are still reasonable while pretty.
The shot above shows about six or seven seperate buildings. The front stairs are missing on several. These are on Malcolm X Blvd. so naturally, they would cost more than those on the side streets. It's unbelievable.
New York mag's been covering that neighbourhood quite a bit recently. Lots of changes, and the prices zooming in the last 18 - 24 months - with no slowdown in sight.
When I was in New York in October, there were articles in a number of papers suggesting that rentals on the Upper East Side were the best value for money these days - and that there was more availability there than people expected.
If I had the money, I'd look south of Washington Square Park.

The most hideous studio, with no separate kitchen and about a 12' x 12' living area starts at about $1250 a month.
I tell ya, it's absolutely disgusting.
you
HAVE to be kidding?
How in the ungodly HELL do people survive ? The pay rates must be outstanding there for people to be able to afford prices like that......
This is good news, Mr K. At least you'll be able to use the loo instead of having to go in the sink.
Well...I'm getting nervous now, because last night I put in the credit application and gave them a deposit, and the realtor told me he'd get back to me by around 9:00 PM to let me know whether I had it or not.
Now it's almost 1:00 on sunday afternoon, and I have left him two messages already, with no response.
Uh oh.
You want he should get up so early, just for you?
Early? Meanwhile I have another guy calling me telling me he might have something else to show me that sounds like it might be an even better, cheaper apartment.
As dlowan might say, "Grrrrrr..."
Just in case, kicky, you might to look into craigslist.com
too. Look at this one!!
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/roo/123578334.html (to share) or this one
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/roo/123518917.html
so go look at the other apartment
do i have to come back there !!!
Trust me, I have done craigslist. In fact, it has been my constant companion for the past week and a half.
I thought about a share, but with the cat it is tough to find a place. Plus I don't really want a roommate. Still though, if things don't work out with this one and I don't find anything within the next week or so, my back-up plan is to get a cheap two-bedroom in south spanish harlem (which is where that first link you gave is) and get a roommate.
ehbeth, no you don't have to come back here, but you should. You know you want to...
Oh yes, I forgot the cat! Where is the cat now?
In Rochester, staying with a friend. Of course they are falling in love with him, so I have to get him back as soon as possible!
Okay, now I'm going out to maybe see these apartments that my realtor-dude called me about.
later
Are you kissing that first deposit, along with the agent, goodbye???
