A little over a week ago I was told by my roommate that the landlady, who is her mother, wants me out by the end of the month.
This news threw into motion a flurry of activity that would have exhausted a squirrel on speed, and now, after dozens of subway and bus rides all over the island of Manhattan, six or seven realtors telling me how hard it will be to find what I want, hundreds of cell phone minutes used, about fifteen or so unsatisfactory apartment viewings, and a final compromise that I've accepted begrudgingly, I have found myself a place to live. I think.
It's a studio apartment on the upper east side with a little alcove area where I can put my bed for a shitload of money. The downside (besides the shitload of money part) is that it is a 4th floor walk-up. That's a pretty big downside, in my opinion, but compared to other places I saw, this one is a frickin' palace. Manhattan apartments are ridiculous. But I have no choice. I am addicted to Manhattan like some people are addicted to crack.
So congratulate me. Now I can move back into Manhattan, and I can reunite with my beloved cat, Rocky!!! Yahoo!!!!
Unless my application doesn't go through.
Naah, that won't happen.
<praying>
4th floor walk up
the kickster will be a lean mean stair walkin machine in no time
good show man, hope it all works out for you
Should have opted for the Lower East Side and saved some dough.
4th floor walk-up is good for getting your newly pink lungs into shape, kicky. Congrats on the place - boo at the old housemate.
Congrats on the new pad.
Have fun moving, I have helped too many fourth floor friends in my time.
Thanks guys! Edgar, the lower east side is not cheap anymore either. I actually started looking in south Spanish Harlem to try to find something a little cheaper, but there didn't seem to be very much available right now, and I didn't have time to wait around.

I guess I will have to adopt this attitude, even though in general, exercise is NOT my thing. Yuk.
And I get my cat back. Aaaaahhh...that will be cool. I love that damn cat.
Wow! That sucks only being given a week's notice! Did you try looking in the obits for an apartment (a la Seinfeld?)
Anyway, ya done good. Who cares if it's only an alcove? You've got a brain in your head, love in your soul and a song in your heart! Those are things they can't take away from you! No, not even your landlady!
I don't blame you for wanting to be reunited with your cat. Cats are gooood!
I haven't been to Manhattan since the early 70s.
I think it's changed some since then. I know it looks a lot better now than it did in the movie "Taxi Driver."
Oh, plus, I have roof access. kind of a cool extra bonus, I think. Maybe I'll go up there and walk my cat every once in a while.

You should come back some time, Edgar.
They finished the railroad....clear to Boston!!
Boston? Who would want to go to Boston?

Ohh! I'm not touching that one with a four foot walk up!
I just realized that I am really f*cking exhausted. This week was almost as hard as the week when I had to find a new place to live two months ago!
And now, as Sublime mentioned, it is time to organize the move. Another hellish task to do.
I'm not moving again...ever!
Whats the average rent for a one bedroom there?
I'm curious as to the difference between Chicago and New York.
Here it is about $1000 to $1500 for a nice one bedroom in a good area.
A nice one bedroom in a good area is at least $1700-1800, if not more.
The most hideous studio, with no separate kitchen and about a 12' x 12' living area starts at about $1250 a month.
I tell ya, it's absolutely disgusting.
Sweet Home Chicago!
It seems like a mortgage would be cheaper, then again property values probably reflect that cost.
A one bedroom condo is from $200,000 to $250,000 in Chicago or more the closer to downtown you get. Are the property values similar or is the rent just astronomical?
