Sozobe,

To be honest with you, Pat Robertson says a lot of things I think he would have much better have kept to himself. I feel a lot of what he says in the public harms Christianity greatly.

Now, there are some of his basic beliefs I agree with. Others I do not. I rarely agree with his tactics concerning them. While I can admire him for his obvious strength of faith, I can also not respect him for much of what he does.

The same can be said with any of us I think. I am sure there are things said by me, others, you, etc., that one might accept and even respect. Then, the opposite happens. Something is said or done that is not accepted or respected.

I think it's pretty important to look at everything with everybody. I have read some of Pat Robertson's books and there are many things I agree 100% with, some 50%, and some none at all. I don't throw out everything the man says because I don't like some of what he says.

Unfortunately, he is in the public eye. Makes it hard on any Christian I think. There are no perfect Christians. I am so far from perfect it isn't funny. But, do you throw out everything I say because of it? Do I throw out everything that you say because you aren't perfect? Hardly.

And I honestly meant what I said. I haven't a clue as to if God was punishing Sharon or not. That is something only God knows. There are things in the Bible that yes, we can point out and say "God says this." However, Pat Robertson saying it was God's punishment is no where in the Bible that I know of.

Oof.

What's so hard about condemning what Robertson actually said?

What you keep coming back to is that Robertson might be right. You can do that, but then don't play the martyr card if someone calls you on it. Robertson's statement is completely beyond the pale.

Sozobe,

Well, I actually thought I pretty much implied I don't think he should have said it. But, if I didn't, I will.

If that is what that man thinks, then that is what that man thinks. However, I don't believe he is speaking for God and should keep his big mouth shut in such situations. If he can't back it up with the Bible, then he should shut up.

Will that do? Very Happy

Better.

It carries the implication that you think it would be fine if he backed it up with the bible -- and I'd still disagree with that, heartily. It's simply an awful thing to say.

But better. I especially liked "his big mouth". :-)

Sozobe,

Well, I know he CAN'T back it up with the Bible firstoff. There are many things that can be backed up with the Bible that do offend. I fully understand that. So, I can see both sides of this one. But in this case, nope, he should have zipped his lip.

It's funny we are discussing this right now. I am listening to a Christian Chat Room and there is an elderly woman in there that, believe it or not, would make you think Pat Robertson is an Angel of Light. No matter how many tell her she is definitely not showing the love of Christ and is trying to scare everyone into heaven, well, she keeps doing it. She thinks she is 100% right. She says you can't love anybody into the kingdom. Well, ya can't scare them in there either! Rolling Eyes

It amazes me enough as it is the differences between believers and non-believers, but when I hear "Christians" doing what they are doing, I completely understand why so many choose not to believe. Saddens me to no end. Sad

There is enough that I do agree with there that I hate to nitpick, but do you choose not to believe in the boogeyman?

Some people have certainly been driven out of a religion because they don't like how their co-religionists acted, but a lot of us just don't believe in the central idea, no matter how the other people who believe in that idea behave. I don't believe in the boogeyman, the chupacabra, or God, and don't feel any absence in my life for it. (OK, MAYBE the chupacabra exists... ;-))

Sozobe,

I understand that completely. But, when it comes to religion, Christians, Christianity, I don't need proof to believe something, but it's like I just know. I know that doesn't sound right.

I'm getting a bad headache and going to take a nap. I'll check in later and maybe I can make more sense then.

Sorry if I gave you a headache. I'm not asking you to defend your own sense of faith, you're welcome to it. Just pointing something out about the wording you chose.

Some of you can point out to someone their point of view is simply retarded in such a civil manner.

I can't.

The fact that you'd even think there's a POSSIBILITY that it's "God's punishment" shows such a lack of logical thinking you may or may not be capable of. Doesn't matter to me whether you defend him, or your religious beliefs, but I gotta laugh at the fact you think that maybe God is up there giving the bad people strokes and what not, and there's a possibility that's what we're looking at in this case.

Then again to play Devil's advocate, I guess someone thinking it's God's work killing someone is no different than thinking something positive happening in one's life is an act of God. So if you've ever thought that in your life, you can't really bash someone for thinking the opposite is possible.

But if you're the Devil's advocate does that mean you believe in the Devil?

Now I'm giving myself a headache...

Seriously, that's what I really dislike about both sides of it. ("God blessed me" or "God punished them" -- it doesn't seem to be "God punished me" very often, does it?)

Timber wrote something about caveman Og recently, I thought of adding at the time that I thought another part of it was Og seeing Urgh getting eaten by a sabertooth tiger, and thinking, "Bummer for Urgh, but Og glad Og not eaten by sabertooth tiger. Og feel bad for feeling glad Og not eaten by sabertooth tiger. Og have idea. Urgh DESERVED to be eaten by sabertooth tiger because he bad. Og DESERVE to live because Og good. Yeah."

Yeh, bust yer hump, work like a dog, take all kind of stinky shithole jobs while going to school and then you work hard at your profession and spend months and years in shithole places gettin shot at and freezin yer ass, so that later in life you can have it better and from some Boogeyman believer you get ."WELL, GOD HAS REALLY BLESSED YOU".

Its times like that I wanna snap somebodies head off like a Slim Jim

Right. I get it. Because I do not agree with your point of view 100% I am probably not capable of logical thinking. Rolling Eyes

I would say I'm a bit more open-minded in the respect that I would at the very least entertain the possibility. You, however, won't. So, who's not capable of what here?

Just as you cannot prove there is no God, you cannot prove He didn't do it for punishment. Just as I cannot prove there is a God, I cannot prove He did it for punishment Idea

The other night at Buffalos I was having wings and hand cut chips with God and He was telling me that He's pretty much sick and tired of people constantly making pronouncements in His name when in reality they don't know their ass from first base.

I agreed, and not merely to be polite. I told God that I would be happy to avenge Him and shut some of these ass-holes up for Him, but He said He couldn't trust me with that kind of power, that if He empowered me so mightily I'd eventually take advantage and use the power to get laid a lot.

How was I supposed to debate that?

That God, He IS the coolest.

Mama Angel you probably haven't been around long enough but some of the old timers will tell you I talk to God frequently.
