Swingers clubs don't harm society, top court rules

Clubs that allow group sex and partner swapping do not harm Canadian society and should not be considered criminal, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled Wednesday.

The high court, which was ruling on two Quebec cases, said Canadian standards can tolerate the activities, even when they are done amid spectators.

The judges, in a 7-2 ruling, said the test for indecency is the harm it causes, and not simply community standards.

The cases involve two swingers clubs in Montreal that allowed sex acts, including swapping.

I knew we shoulda planned the A2K get-together for Montreal.
But would anyone listen to me?
Noooooooooooo.

Right now, I'm thinking the Supreme Court here is COOOOL.

Quote:
"Consensual conduct behind code-locked doors can hardly be supposed to jeopardize a society as vigorous and tolerant as Canadian society," said the opinion of the seven-to-two majority, written by Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin.

I just saw this on the news tonight.

Montreal has always been a liberal place, has it not? Another reason for me to love Quebec and its fiery, enthusiastic people. I swears it has got nothing to do with my family roots there. Razz

Apparently there were some of these clubs out in BC and in Windsor at some point in the 1970's.

Why is this such an extraordinary news?

(Friends of mine are just going to be divorced, because she doesn't want to join hin going to swinger clubs. [Their kids don't like that either.])

We live next to the U.S., Walter.

They can't buy sex toys in some states.

This is a reminder of the differences between the two countries - for when people (most often Muricans) say there's no difference between Canada and the U.S.

Some of us are proud to live in a country whose Supreme Court can comment on its "vigorous and tolerant" society. It matters to us.

Doesn't matter to you? Big whoop.

Well, it's just that we have such here since ... I don't know how long.

(Just read that we had about 250 swinger clubs before 1990, now something like 400 to 500. Plus uncountable "more privat" ones = not advertising.)

Three cheers for the Canadians!!!! Very Happy

That's what I like. A government who knows how to keep their noses out of its citizens' private business. Now if it weren't so damned cold there...................

I think, to be fair, you have to be willing to switch positions.

I do like that vigorous and tolerant assessment, it's just great. I wonder if Ms. McLachlin swings?

My wife once took me to a swapping party.

All she was offered was an old ironing board and a pair of oven gloves.
