More on those Chinese (amongst other things)

Quote:
World's watching despite ref issues

Boston Herald
Wednesday, June 28, 2006

The referee controversy is not harming the World Cup TV ratings.

FIFA's TV rights partner, Infront, estimates an accumulated TV audience exceeding 30 billion across the tournament.

Infront managing director Dominik Schmid said about 40 percent of the viewing audience was female, something he could only attribute to "a World Cup phenomenon."

All but one of FIFA's 207 affiliated members had negotiated broadcasting deals.

He said ratings records were being topped around the world, even in countries that did not qualify.

Schmid pointed to an England-Paraguay match that had a TV audience in China of 62.9 million - more than the combined populations of England and Paraguay.

oh dear now I am really worried. Will walk barefoot up your nearest mountain, wearing sack-cloth and ashes...

(Did I ever say Mrs S and I walked up Croagh Patrick in Ireland...twice. On the way up the devout were circling the statues at the stations. I literally could not believe my eyes seen this boy clearly in agony near the top bare foot and bloody)

Football.......? What football?

Difficult choice this. Germany V Italy

ummmm Think I'll go watch "Le Tour"

I think I will back Germany cause they fall over less. (not much less, but still........)

Jokes about italians and diving are a dime a dozen here at the moment.

Berlin exspects 1 million people to watch tonight's match on big screens at "public viewing" places, at least 200,000 will do the same in Dortmund, towns here are concerning and police and town council's public affairs offices are giving warnings that places will be overcrowded and might be shut ...

I think, I'm going to watch the match.

Is that the same as High Definition tv? I was looking at a large plasma screen tv, it was quite remarkable.

Why watch the tv at home Walter when you could easily go down to Dortmund and try and watch the match on a big screen somewhere with 100,000 others?

It will be a close game I think, but Germany have home advantage, and are on a roll. Germany to win 2:1 is my prediction...hope so anyway.

I could go to our 'Kur theater', the townhall place in Lippstadt or some halls there or in Geseke and join300/2,500/4,000/4,500.

I only don't do such because I want to share my feelings in the very same moment with tenthousand A2K'ers!

Not sure, if digital tv is the same as High Definition tv (don't think so).
It's the same difference as between FM and digital radio: better sound quality, no "lines", more infos ...

Some hundred fans were at our local airport at noon, when the Portuguese team flew home. (No reports about rioting Dutch or so from there  )

It is nice of you to stick around, Walter. If I was in Germany, I would be tempted to follow the crowds and watch the big screens. (If you do leave your house, it would be understandable.) However, soccer commentary on A2K is excellent!

Yes, it's a pain that you cant watch the football on video anywhere on the net. Not unless you download and install TVU, I think, and then you can watch it on some Chinese channel, CCTV-5, and on ESPN2. Or you have to download and install something called ESPN 360 from ESPN.com, that's also said to work.

Bizarre, really. Something to do with expensive rights.

But -- no despair! There IS a way to follow the football game live and direct on your computer! They broadcast it through Telnet! (Anyone remember Telnet?).

Not much there right now, but as soon as the game starts, just go to http://ascii-wm.net/ and click where it says "live stream" at the bottom of the screen...! Yay!

...hee hee hee ... OK, you can also just listen to the game being commentated like you're listening to the radio, on the The Sun 2006 World Cup Audio Player ;-)

You'll like the radio link, then. The Telnet link is more of a gag... (it woulda been funnier not to betray that until the next game, but I dont want to get your hopes up.)

As for TVU and the like, see: Watch FIFA World Cup Live from your PC! and, in more detail, World Cup live on your PC in 5 easy steps.

Mind you, that's P2P (Peer2Peer) software, and one of the commenters on either of those blog entries warned that he used it to keep an eye on the game at work and afterwards got a call from the IT dept, asking him if he was aware that he was running some P2P software and that this was not allowed...
