Betting odds give between 12 and 15 to 1 at the moment for a Ghana win.

I reckon that may just be worth a fiver.

This is the one to watch, as I'm sure that there's going to be fireworks, and possibly a surprise. If Ghana is up for it, and Ronaldo's double whopper burger is laying heavily on his stomach, anything can happen.

I'm pulling for Ghana even if I don't think they'll win. Not sure who to pick in Spain v. France. I'm always wrong, so I think I won't pick.

Well, ok. Spain.

No wait, France.

No, Spain. Definitely Spain.

I reckon the Black Star boys will give Brazil a fright.

Shame about Aus. Its gut wrenching to go out in such a fashion...but going out with a last kick dubious penalty is no disgrace.

It seems the referees are trying to make soccer a no contact sport. The governing bodies are terrified of being sued if a multi million pound player (I talking money but it could apply to Ronaldo as well) was to take legal action for damages. Its like everything else, once the money starts to dominate, it ruins the game.

I've heard, clubs are doing so as well - thinking of a special one in northern England ...

Brazil got a quick goal in the 6th minute or so, but it's looking tight now. Ghana are taking lots of shots. This is the opposite of yesterday's Ukraine v Switzerland. Very exciting to watch two offensive teams with two leaky defenses.

The Brazilians must be feeling threatened because they keep feigning injuries to break Ghana's momentum.

Brazil gets another one. Ghana have been running the match but they can't score.

That result definitely did not match the play. Ghana were the better team. Scoring is what matters, though. So Brazil moves on.

Ghana was by far the most dominant team, especially in the first half, always on the attack, had the initiative, had the better wizardry of play - respect to 'em.

But jesus, what happens with the Ghanaians when they reach the goal? To miss three good opportunities in front of the enemy goal can be bad luck, to miss 5 can be lousy luck, but how many did they miss in this game? It seemed like a dozen! Thats no longer bad luck, thats a lacking skill.

Such a pity. Even if Ghana seemed to lose the plot a bit in the second half, making more sloppy mistakes - perhaps tiring out? - they did play well, and 3-0 was nowhere near a reflection of the state of play. But there you have it: Brazil played the counter - atypical for 'em - and they were good at it.

When Ghana went forward, they tick-tacked it around too long, until there was already a mass of Brazilians to defend. When Brazil caught the ball and had a rare breakout, they spurted out there and boom.

Probably just a question of routine, of experience. If Ghana spends the next four years practicing target-shooting, who knows what we'll see next time. ;-)

3:1 in France-Spain also definitely didnt seem to reflect the field play - tho I only saw the second half, so, cant say beyond that. But oooooooohh that was a beauty of a goal, that last one of Zidane!!!

I switched on in the 90th minute - you are right - Zuzu's goal was all class.

I beg to differ on Ghana-Brazil.

It was a cat and mouse play. Brazil attracting the Ghanans and then lethally counterattacking.
Parreira could read the African game perfectly. Ghana defeated the teams who attacked it, but was weak with the team that counterattacked it.

The lack of shooting skill (noticed by nimh) was taken for granted. Had the Africans had a better tecnique (not necessarily glorious) they would have tied Italy and whipped both Czech Republic and the US.

Freeduck, we have to do something about you. Lately, you've been rooting for the loser all the time.
Would you please root for Argentina against Germany and for Ukraine against Italy?

That was a great game. That last goal by Zidane looked like he was wanting to show everyone that he's still got it. He's still hot.

Excellent play by both games, and the referee too.

I am great at picking losers. I'll tell you what, I pick Argentina to beat Germany and Ukraine to beat Italy. Now you should get the result you like.

I have to say I was pulling for France in that last game. Sometimes the team I pick to win isn't actually the one I want to win.

Hamsters are waiting for RAM. I'd ordinarily link, but forget it. Just took me over an hour to post a f/n beef stew recipe. Now, on the matter of Spain and France, I was torn, rather usual now... happens to me when I start to know teams in whatever sport. Picked Espana. Oh, well.

Still, congratulations to Francis, if he cares about all this.

Caring about a sport and a team has sometimes been for me the opposite of rooting for the home team, but not always, complicating matters on that.
Thus when I lived in LA I despised the LA Rams and liked the 49'ers. They deserved my interest in those years...
You don't see me rooting for the US soccer team. It is probably an outcome of too much pr from so little material over decades, not particular to soccer, as we call it.. Underneath that seeming phobia I'd be pleased and am pleased when US teams show up and do well. I've had jingoism priming, which has put me off my feed for all that. Too much jingoistic tv at Olympics time, when much more interesting stuff was going on with the rest of the world. I'll get with the US soccer team when they get their knickers bundled.

I think you'll be picking the loser team there.

By the way, how is the Mexican population handling the defeat?

It's a national tragedy CJ, but since the presidential elections are around the corner... well, things could get worse.
