Our team has HUGE problems. This is nowhere the level that we had in the Confederations Cup. No hope in the next round, specially against Argentina. Not only in collectively the team has no idea, but also individually. Stupid red cards, dumb hands in the area, missing PK's! No definition, no midfield, shaky defense. La Volpe is also sending out formations that even on the board dont work.

Yes, the team has an attitude and the fans have been great, but you can't win a game just with that. The only possible thing we can accomplish is the same image that we have accquired. A team that gives its heart out against strong teams, makes beautiful plays on occasions, has close matches, but never delivers the finishing blow. Well... at least thats what happened on the last World Cup's, saying that it will this time around, would just be optimistic.

Im prepared for another 4 year dissappointment.

Found this on the wire:

Nostradamus predicts Spanish World Cup win

Sport (6/20/2006) . Author: ThinkSpain

According to a report on the '20minutos' website, French medic and prophet Michel de Notredame (1503-1566), better known as Nostradamus, predicted that Spain will win the Germany 2006 World Cup finals.

The prophecy predicts that: "At the end of the sixth month of 2006, the King of Spain will cross the Pyrenees with his army. The legions of Beelzebub await the battle on the central European planes. Destruction and defeat will fall on the evil-doers. The Holy Grail will be returned to Spain by the triumphant King."

Haha, in mediotiempo.com, according to certain sections (dont know the technical word) in the Bible, Argentina will defeat Germany 3-0 in the final.

I love this prophecies game.

Well, Netherlands Argentina was quite a nice game. Surprisingly so, considering the shoddy matches so far from the Dutch. Argentina was better, but wasn't supreme. Fun to watch, too bad no one scored.(especially on dutch side, but hey, I'm biased Smile )

I don't think Portugal should pose much of a problem if we can keep this form.

Netherlands - Argentina sounds like it was a great game. I am no expert at soccer, but my daughter's soccer coach always told her that a match ending 0 - 0 is a well-played game.

Is this true of all soccer? (Sorry, but I live in the U.S.)

Hey, yeah, if we can keep Argentina to 0:0 we should be able to win from Portugal.

Nice game in all, yeah Argentina was better, but we werent anywhere near outplayed, 50/50 ball possession, we got a lot of corners - some cringing missed chances, but there were enough of 'em..

Still, I woulda preferred playing Mexico ... they dont have Figo. But I'll be cheering Mejico against Argentina now, tho; and the ref wasn't always fair to us either. There was at least one free kick we shoulda got, and that time the two of 'em were still kicking into our player when he was already on the ground, and we got nothing! Evil or Very Mad

Could we please have Mr. Graham Poll as referee against Argentina?

I mean, this guys act out even more than we do, but they don't get the yellow cards. They commit hard fouls and nothing happens...

We need an impartial ref. I think an Englishman can do wonders!

wandeljw - That is not necesarily so. It often means two teams are quite evenly matched up with a decent defensive line at least, and some offensive capabilities. This was the case in this match. But sometimes you get teams playing strategically, ging for the safe point of the draw. This does not nice soccer make.
Of course, two teams sacrifcing offense for defense will also not play fun to watch games, but due to a solid defensive line keep the ball out of their goal. Nevertheless, if two teams are willing to play to the best of their capabilities, 0-0 often means a good game.

Nimh - We had some good chances, but Argentina had more. We were lucky at times, up until the final signal from the referee. Once again I found van Nistelrooij somewhat disappointing, while I thought van Der Sar played a great game. Same goes for the rest of the defensive line, especially Boularouz. Really good tactic of the defense. Simply work that ball away from the goal given the opportunity, and no risks. Rather a corner then letting those offensive front players from Argentina play their own game. Those are truly incredible. Very quick and tactical.
I've got Argentina pegged for World Champion this year, but I sincerely hope they won't make it of course Smile

I would have preferred Mexico as well, seeing as how they have played so far, but I can't say Portugal impressed me. They look tired, if you ask me. We have good offensive capabilities, a nice midfield (with our glorious captain playing very well) and a good defensive line as well.
I can't say I have watched Portugal extensively, but what I saw, especially by Figo, didn't seem all that good.

Agreed that Van der Sar is a hero, and that we played defense well. Which is nice, normally we're better known for our offense.

Now - see - all this here I'm missing, being so far from the home front. I just saw that in the Netherlands, in the music charts top 10 this week, there's four songs about the World Cup. Take that, Fat Les:

2. Guus Meeuwis - Ik wil dat ons land juicht
4. André Hazes & Ali B - Wij houden van Oranje 2006
8. Toppers - Wir Sind die Holländer
9. Café de Wereld - Café de Wereldcup

If there is just one thing that manages to effectively kill any enthusiasm I can muster for World Championships, it's the over the top manner most people over here deal with it. Orange all around us, crazy for Wuppies, and this music hype.. Not to mention the 'Hot lingerie wearing models (hot lingerie? PULEAZE!) taking penalties'.
I'll stick to the game on the field, thank you very much.
I heard that Serbia-Montenegro - Ivory Coast was a good game as well... Good to hear, considering both teams were already eliminated from the competition.

I've got a root joke for steve too.

Farmer1: I'm thinking of going down to Sydney for the show.

Farmer2: Yeah, which route will you take?

Farmer1: Probably the wife, after all she stuck by me during the drought.

This should link to the video to this one:

mms://wmedia.sbs.nl/sbs/SBS6_HartvanOranje_GuusMeeuwis_high_wmv.wmv

Dont think much of the song, but the video's cute... None of the wild anarchy or self-deprecatory humour that makes the English videos so cool, of course. More like, warmly patriotic - "gezellig"

Far more curious, however, is this one...

Quote:
4. André Hazes & Ali B - Wij houden van Oranje 2006

Weirdness with Moroccan-Dutch rapper Ali B (the rapper everyone can love) "teaming up" with the late King of the Tearjerker Songs himself, Andre Hazes - in an edit, of course, the good man's been dead for a while.

You can see the vid here: http://www.oranjegekken.nl/db/?p=570

Odd. But very Dutch. The scene you see inside the pub? Its real. Thats whats goin' on now... all over. Seriously Very Happy

(Famous Hazes lines that any Dutchman can sing along too: "Netherlands, Oh Netherlands, we are the champion / We love Orange, for its deeds and its doings". Sure beats our national anthem's "I am of German blood".)

Finally..
Quote:
9. Café de Wereld - Café de Wereldcup

This video is eh, online too... Shocked
(heeheeheehee)

This must leave you completely baffled. It must be totally incomprehensible. But its very, very Dutch, too.

Video: http://dewerelddraaitdoor.vara.nl/media.php?id=159
(Click "breedband" if you're on broadband (duh))

The cartoon characters are part-famous footballers/trainers - Cruyff, Van Gaal - part Bekende Nederlanders, "famous Dutchmen", or as they are abbreviated, "BN'ers". And the "song" is mostly riffing on various big Dutch-language hits - carnival hits and the like - of the past. Yeah, that's really what they're like Razz

LOVED the vids and the music, nimh. Here in Gotham City, I've watched a few minutes of several matches, at least in our neighborhood, nothing like the fun you guys are having.

Peláez, who scored against South Korea and the Netherlands in WC 1998 appears briefly on the right side of the screen.
The man in his late fifties (not the fatso with the moustache) who kind-of-dances is Raul Orvañanos, former goalkeeper in the Mexican league. They're both TV sports commentators now.
