METAIRIE, Louisiana (AP) -- It's no ordinary holiday season in the Gulf Coast this year, so Frank Evans built an unconventional holiday display at a suburban New Orleans shopping mall to match.
He thought the tiny blue-tarped roofs, little toppled fences and miniature piles of hurricane debris in the display he builds annually for the mall struck just the right humorous tone.
The mall disagreed and told Evans, a landscape architect from nearby Gretna, to dismantle it.
What would possess anyone to do this and think it was funny? I personally think it's in poor taste but I don't live there and I can't say what it's like to be there. The residents seem to think it's funny and a little light humor goes a long way. What do you think? Poor taste? or Priceless?

Okay, I'll dive in.
I think it is kind of funny.
If everything I'd owned had been smashed up and washed away I'd probably cringe at some Thomas Kincade twinkly Christmas village.

That's true. You have a good point about the whole happy happy joy joy crap.
Never thought of that.
I think it's in bad taste. But, sometimes people do make jokes about things just to cope.
You're from Louisiana so I'll defer to your assesment, Momma Angel.
Still, I think it is funny.
Sometimes bad taste IS funny.
I've been through a hurricane evacuation myself and I know that people often find humor in the idea of losing everything but what really matters.
That is one of the reasons that things don't mean much to me.
I've been waiting for other people to reply to this thread because I think Bella has posed an interesting question.
I love it when people disagree with me!
I wouldn't call the display "funny".
"Topical"? Yes.
"Indicative of human beings picking up and starting over"? Yes.
"Symbolic of hope and rebirth"? Absolutely.
"An effort to display a timeless message"? Absolutely.
Quote:"Although most people did enjoy the decorations, a few customers found the display to be in poor taste," said a statement issued Tuesday night by Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie.
Customers or ostriches?
I think laughter is not only " good medicine" as the saying goes, I think it is a survival tool.
Not being in the rubbish of New Orleans, that display sounds like a great laugh to me.
It is a truthful representation of the current situation, displayed in a way that allows people to vent safely.
It reminds people that there is still humor to be had and lets everyone know that what they are living in and going through is seen by EVERYONE..
As for anything else, there will always be someone who is offended by it. No ifs ands or butts about it..
I have to say that , I am surprised the man who created this , didnt use it to make a political statement...!
He didnt create little bodies in wheelchairs, he didnt create bathrooms piled with human waste, nor did he create the likeness of " looters" and have them carrying boxes of beer and cigarettes through water...
I would have expected that frankly..
But, just as humor? no politics involved?! Wow..
I am amazed at his confidence in doing this.
Most people , when something like this happens, automatically jump to judge and act as if they HAVE to morn something for the rest of thier lives.
It is almost tabu for someone to laugh.
They believe there is no room for humor in ANYTHING at ANYTIME if it is devistating to even ONE person and judge and hate those who can find humor in situations like these.
I guarantee you , his is not the first person to find or make something funny out of the hurricane..
He is just one of the first people to go public, or GET publicity out of what he has done.
For that he will be attacked. From all ends.
It seems to me, in society, that people are supposed to follow the lemming path.
Dont laugh unless the other lemmings are laughing.
Dont walk where the other lemmings are not walking
Dont believe what the other lemmings dont believe
shewolfnm,
I agree there are those that will find it funny and those that find it in poor taste. I find it in poor taste but I don't see that it has much impact on the world. So, it's just one of those things.
Have you heard the new version of the Battle of New Orleans? Oh boy, if that was let loose on A2K, you can bet there would be a war. I think as long as we can all keep things in perspective, we will be ok.
I dont think it will have a HUGE impact on the world.
But I DO think it will get its 15 minutes of fame that will cause some arguement, some hate , and some laughter.
Unfortunatly.. it will all be at the artists expence.
Those who will truly hate it, and have a position of power to voice thier opinions ( writters, news castors..etc), will probally insult the artist for what he has done. This insult will more then likely become an attack on his PERSON instead of his art, and the feelings it brought about in the viewer.
that is more of how i ment the statement of "" He will be attacked""
Here is a question-
What if his art / display/ creations -- were sold for charity?
What if he created these images , in what ever form, to sell them to bring in more money for N.O.
Would the be offencive then? Or just a replication of reality for NO residents?
I would say no.
Behind the mask of financial assistance, many things like this are never seen as offencive. They are seen as truthes and allowed to fly under the radar of criticizim in the name of 'donations'
I personally find the display a bit humorous. However, in todays politically correct society, I am sure some individuals may find it not only in bad taste but insulting.
If that is all it takes for a few of these people to get through this very tough time in their lives then so be it. No harm no foul as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure the mall only made him dismantle the display because they did not want to deal with complaints and possibly lose a few potential customers.
If that display was in the Boston common, the biggest concern would be that it is a "Christmas" display and not a generic "Holiday" display.
