Was the U. S. an ally of Saddam Hussein at the time of the atrocities (e.g., gassings) that we will be trying him for?

If so, were we aware of what he was doing?

The main charge against him is for a 1982 gassing of people in Dujail. The U.S. had minimal diplomatic relations with Iraq at the time (similar to what we have with Cuba right now). Rumsfeld was dispatched as an envoy to Iraq in 1983 and again in 1984 and full diplomatic relations were established after those meetings.

It'll be years before the papers are declassified to show exactly what the U.S. knew at that point in time but I'd be highly surprised to learn that we were totally unaware.
