Acquiunk, That's a good un. LOL
the Palio - thanks osso - that's it.
There are two dates for palios in Siena, and more palios in other places in Italy... and similar festivals that aren't horse races. For example, in Arezzo, there is a jousting thing in piazza Grande, and in Ivrea there is orange hurling, groups wearing masks.
I always pause at that, even went to Ivrea to check it out, since my home area of Los Angeles harbors many many gangs (many many being a favorite numeric device of a friend) and LA/Orange county was for quite a while the seat of many orange tree orchards.
A common component, if not across the board, is that the groups involved represent neighborhood rivalries, some, as in Siena, very old, intense, rivalries.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 - Lawyers in the C.I.A. leak case said Thursday that they expected I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, to be indicted on Friday, charged with making false statements to the grand jury.
Karl Rove, President Bush's senior adviser and deputy chief of staff, will not be charged on Friday, but will remain under investigation, people briefed officially about the case said. As a result, they said, the special counsel in the case, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, was likely to extend the term of the federal grand jury beyond its scheduled expiration on Friday.
