That there are more verses in the bible about a jealous, vendictive, murderious god compared to a loving, forgiving, reasonable god goes to show the contradictions that are misinterpreted by the religious.

Perhaps the misinterpretations are on the part of the non-religious? Has this thought ever crossed your mind? And, how would you know they are misinterpreted if you don't understand the Bible in the first place? You have made it very clear you believe the Bible to be a comic book. Are you given to interpreting comic books?

Frank never says he does not understand the bible.

He (and I) believe he understands it very well.

And you need to reqd what he says.

He bothers with the bible because it has a great influence today, especially in your country, and many believe a great deal of this influence is for ill, as powerful people attempt to impose the moral world view of wonderfully literate, but narrow and bigoted and ignorant primitives on the complex world of today.

Phoenix,
I wonder why a superstitious, barely civilized people would create this fantastic story and to what end? What could they gain by it?

Regarding the second point. I do not agree. Modern people do not attempt to use Leviticus as a moral standard for today.

Intrepid, many ancient peoples had (and have) similarly rich and wonderful creation myths (see what the noninitiated are allowed to know of Australian Aboriginal myths and legends, for example, they are every bit as rich and powerful and as full of moral lessons as the bible) and theologies and tales of gods and so forth, and similarly rich semi historical semi legendary stories and so on.

You simply are not as familiar with them.

The issue with modern people not taking Leviticus as a moral standard for today is that there are many in the US attempting to foist biblical morality on the masses.

On what basis, by the way, given that the bible is supposed to be divine revelation, do christians get to pick and choose which bits they decide are to be taken as a moral standard and which aren't?

"My wrath shall become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless." (Exodus 22:24)

God kills all of Egypt's firstborn, including animals, to punish Pharoah (EX 12:29)

God kills Korah and 250 others, with their families, because they questioned Moses' authority. (Num 16:1-40)

God smites a whole city with hemorrhoids as punishment for taking the ark. (1 Sam 5:6-9)

God kills 50,000 men of Beth-shemesh because they looked into the Ark. (1 Sam 6:19)

God kills David's child in order to punish David. (2Sam 12:15-18)

God kills 70,000 men because of David's sin of taking a census. (2 Sam 24:15, 1 Chron 21:14)

Such a loving god; kills innocent people to show his wrath.

dlowan, Many times. I'm just mystified how anybody can understand the bible with all its contradictions, omissions, and mixed messages.

When I see any story with miracles such as coming back from the dead and feeding thousands with several breads and fishes, I automatically rate them as a comic book.

Oh ye of little faith.

hmmm, I am somewhat curious as you what omissions you are talking about. Do you know something that the rest of us do not? Was it on the back page of a comic book?

If you don't understand the contradictions and the mixed messages, you'll never understand the omissions.

Omissions? If there were omissions how do you know what they are? OMG! C.I.! Are you psychic? It's your statement about the omissions. Back it up!

Let me try. Tell me what they are so I can have them verified by an independent third party.

Well, I hope you are down there rolling on the floor laughing at yourself because you are doing a pretty good job of making yourself look the fool.

You are asked a straight question about something you state and you refuse to answer. I mean Frank always answers questions directed at him about something he states. Now, what's wrong with this picture? Rolling Eyes
