Swimpy, p-dog, O'Bill, BROOKE, soz, other mid-westerners (and of course the local Chicagoans which now includes joe, sublime, jpb, wandeljw, gargamel, childofthelight and, drum-roll, please.... jpisnolongerinmilwaukee!!!!) as well as any others from far and near... It's time to start setting aside June 1 - 4 for the 2nd annual Chicago A2K meet. Walter is arriving Thursday afternoon and leaving for NY and Bah'-stin on Monday. We can start the discussions here and, depending how many takers we get, we might start a new thread. Although we can't hope to out-do last year's festivities, we hope to make this event another one for the record books! Mark you calendars, we're looking forward to seeing you in Chicago in early June!!!

I'm going to monopolize Walter on one of those days, as I will probably have tickets to Wrigley Field. Hopefully it will be a better day -- and a better game -- than the time I took Thomas to see the Cubs play.

I was in Chicago in early December and I almost froze my ass off. Gimme sunny Southern Cal any day!

You seem to have been in a daze since Sunday, Bill. What happened? Smile

I'm still not sure about the rules re offside with baseball Laughing

(But I will learn all it until then - the Paderborn Untouchables are thirds in our First Federal Division, the Lippstadt Ochmonds are playing in a lower division.)

Relax, Walter. There are only three rules that matter when you watch a game in Wrigley Field, and none of them have to do with baseball.

1) Wear a Cubs hat, not a Cardinals hat.

2) When ordering beer, make sure it's Old Style, not Budweiser. Budweiser is made in Saint Louis, so it's associated with the Cardinals. (I'm not sure what the Cubs fan's obsession with the Cardinals comes from. Perhaps it's winning-the-world-series envy.)

3) Wear warm clothes. It can be freezing cold in Wrigley field, especially when the game is long.

There was a fourth rule governing the appropriate snack to order, but I have forgotten it.

There are rules of baseball too, but they're hard to explain in writing. The best way to learn them is to watch a game and watch when Joefromchicago cries (in the direction of the umpire: "oh come on", "you've gotta be kidding", etc.

That's about it. Have fun -- despite my reflexive teasing, Wrigley Field is a great place to hang out at!

I've got a couple of PM's re such already by joefromchicago - certainly that what you, Thomas, mentioned, is in their as well. But it will take some weeks until I've gone through all those pages, links, advice etc etc

So thanks very much for your comprehensive summary

I sent Brooke a PM invite. I'll also send one to Timber to give him a heads up. Both intended to attend last year's meet and had to cancel at the last minute. Hopefully we can entice them to try again.

That goes without saying.

The Busch family, owners of Annheuser-Busch and brewers of Budweiser, owned the Cardinals for many decades. Although the family no longer owns the team, the association between the Cardinals and the beer remains bad mojo for Cubs fans.

I'd like to say that, because Walter will be coming in June, it will not be cold. But I know better than to say that. My advice: bring a jacket.

Get Italian sausage at the concession stands. If you have to order a hot dog, NO KETCHUP!

That happens a lot at Cubs games. It's always the umpire's fault.

The umpires are only tracking the evolving standards of sportsmanship that mark the progress of a maturing game.

I went to a Cubs game with joe a few months ago. I heard him yell other things that are even more informative about how baseball is played. I can quote them here but I doubt joe would give me permission. Smile

I don't know what you're talking about. After a few beers I become an erudite and keenly perceptive commentator on the intricacies of baseball. And I feel obliged to share my observations with those who may be seated within my immediate vicinity, so that they may all benefit from my valuable insights. I expect no reward or compensation: I do it pro bono publico.
