My personal RANT about the ever growing trend of (Self Checkout)

Where should I began. First let me start off by saying that I hate the very existence of Self Checkout. When I go into a grocery store or any other type of store, I didn't come there to perform UNPAID FREE labor. Scanning products and bagging products is the function of PAID employees.

Now if someone tries to tell me that the store is providing self checkout to better serve the customer or to make it more convenient for the customer, I would say that's a load of BULLSHIT. Anyone with basic common sense would know that's not true. I would respond to that bullshit by saying: "What happen to the cashier express lane they use to have?" I remember the days when there were two lanes dedicated for customers who had 15 items or less. Sometimes those lanes were dedicated for customers with 10 items or less. And those express lanes were all manned by real cashiers. They were NOT Self Checkout. Those express lanes were designed to help customers with fewer items to get in and out of the store quicker.

Now, let's talk about what's really going on with the ever growing trend of Self Checkout. The existence of Self Checkout doesn't have a damn thing to do with providing a better service for the customers. If that were true they would not have replaced the (10 item or less) manned express lanes with these Self Checkouts. If you don't believe, next time you go into a store, look around to see if you can find the old express lanes with a sign posted 10 items or less. It's been some years since I've seen any of those posted express lanes which were actually manned by real cashiers. Those express lines that were manned with cashiers often moved quickly because the lines were for people with small number of items. The point I am making is there was never legitimate reason for these Self Checkouts except for cutting labor cost. It was never about the customer service aspect. There was never a customer service reason for creating the existence of Self Checkout.

There's been times when I've gone into a store and there were no cashiers. It was only self checkouts. My main point is "Why am I doing employee duties when I SUPPOSED to be the customer?" "Am I the customer or Am I the employee?" "Shouldn't I get a paycheck if I scanned and bag my own items?" Bring that the old (10 items or less express lanes) when the cashier scanned my items and bagged by items for me. Let's not forget that those old (10 items or less express lanes) that had real cashiers move pretty quick.

I agree with you completely. Unfortunately the ones making the decisions don't care what we think. Only if they lose enough money will they rethink it. Which you already know without my input.

I always use the self checkouts, they're so much quicker and convenient.

I don't know the problem is.

@edgarblythe,
1. There have been times I would be standing in the regular cashier line and an employee would come over to me and say I could come over to the self checkout.

2. I thought that it would be self evident and understood that I chose to not use the self checkout line.

3. Is as if the employee is under the assumption that maybe I didn't see the Self Checkout.

4. How can I not see it. It's in plain view.

5. Sometimes if I would respond by saying "No thanks. I'm not here to work for free."

@izzythepush,
1. I remember on a couple of occasions I went to checkout and didn't see any cashier lines open. None of the lights were on.

2. So, I then walk over to the Self checkout area and told them that I needed a cashier to check me out.

3. They then said that they only had self checkout at that moment.

4. I then demanded to see a manager, because I'm not here to do the job of an employee. I am a customer. Not an employee.

5. They immediately got someone to open up one of those closed lanes and provided me the service I ask for.

6. Then immediately after they were done with my service, they then closed that register back down.

7. When you are a long time regular customer for many years, many of the staff at the store get to know you personally.

8. The ones who know me, already know that I will demand to have a cashier open up a lane for me.

9. Because I am a long time regular customer, they show me the decent courtesy of opening up a register so that I don't have to use the self checkout.

10. I normally go to the grocery store for reason or another two tothree time per week.

11. Each visit, I might purchase anywhere from four to five items to as much as dozen items at any particular visit.

@izzythepush,
1. The cashiers, workers, and store managers are courteous and professional.

2. I just refuse to ever use the self checkout.

3. The act of me performing (free unpaid labor) for some (greedy corporation) that don't give a damn about customer service pisses me off.

4. My issue is with the greedy Corporate bosses that are probably located somewhere on the other side of the country.

5. They are the ones who are behind everything.

@Real Music,
I'd rather not queue up for ages.

(I'm regretting responding to this thread.)

@izzythepush,
1. I am merely RANTING about something I don't like.

2. Sometimes it's good to just rant and get stuff off your chest.

3. Sometimes other people may share that exact same RANT.

4. Sometimes other people will disagree with the ranting.

@Real Music,
I agree, I don't like self checkouts either and never use them.

I would much rather stand in a queue and have my groceries scanned and bagged for me. I'm never in so much of a hurry that waiting to be served is a problem for me.

In Sainsburys I can get rid of all my loose change at self checkouts and pay the balance with a card.

Try that with a human, and you won't be popular.

I prefer them, I'd rather bag my own shopping my way.

@cherrie,
1. Do you remember BEFORE we had these self-checkouts, stores use to have Cashier Express Lanes for people who only had a few items?

2. That way the people who had ten items or less could get in and out faster than the people who had a lot of stuff.

3. The point being is the Express Lanes existed and were manned with real cashiers.

4. There was always a lane for people with only a few items who didn't want to be slowed up by people with a lot of items.

5. The Cashier Express Lanes existed BEFORE the implementation of self-checkout for people who wanted to get in and out faster.

6. They discontinued the Cashier Express Lanes that were manned by real cashiers and replaced them with this Self-Checkout bullshit.

7. I wish they would abolish these self-checkouts or at least greatly diminish their existence and then bring back the Cashier Espress Lanes for people with ten of fewer items.

8. I really love those Cashier Express Lanes that were manned by real cashier.

9. There was a time when every lane had a cashier. You had Express Lanes and you had Regular Lanes.

10. Regardless of whether you went to the Regular Lane or the Express Lane, All of the lanes had a real cashier.

In Texas, the HEB stores have self checkouts, but they also have a cashier for ten or fewer items.

@edgarblythe,
It's been many years since I've last seen a Cashier Express Lane.
All of the stores I've been in only have Regular Lanes and Self-Checkout Lanes.

@izzythepush,
1. Many of the stores I go to have Coin Star machines.

2. They are normally located not too far from the front entrance of the stores.

3. You basically unload and empty all of your coins into this machine.

4. The machine will print you out a receipt indicating how much you had in coins.

5. You take that receipt to a store cashier to cash it out and get the dollar amount indicated on that receipt.

6. That could be $20 in coins. For that matter it could be $200 in coins.

7. The machine does charge a fee for the service of counting your coins for you to be cashed out.

8. The way that fee is applied is it will deduct 10 cents from every dollar you would have gotten, and that will be the amount left on your receipt to cash out.

@Real Music,
That's way too much hassle.

Don't you think it's a bit ironic that you'll go through all that **** to avoid using a self checkout because you don't want to do 'manual labour?'

@izzythepush,
1. Not really. You are comparing apples to oranges.

2. I cash out a ton of coins one time every four to six months.

3. I shop at grocery stores two to three time every week.

4. I can't imagine someone taking a huge bag of $100 unrolled loose coins to a cashier or a self-checkout.
