the protest against all the money spent in space exploration would be a lot lesser if space agancies explored another possibility, while exploring space. that of advertisements. they can rake up a healthy chunk of money that way.
there's 2 ways ad-money can be raked up from space programs. one is shiooting the ads in sace - like Pepsi did on a glavkosmos craft.
the other is to sell "bragging rights". take for example the "foam" that was removed this time. Supposing the astraunaut had used 3M products (or Black and decker or some other), then NASA can sell the bragging rights to the respective company for a price. so 3M can now go around telling that they are the ones who provided the astronauts with life saving equipment.
similarly nissin of japan came up with "space ram" for the astronauts. NASA can sell them the right to show pics of astraunauts enjoying a "space ram" in the space station.
i am not for using "logos" on shoulders or on the space craft, like it happens in F1 races. but even that option is vry much there.
and then there's space tourism.

Irrespective of whether that is a compliment or an ironic jest I like "coinsistency".
I will use it sometime if I may.

It is time to build an anti-asteroid tactic. Exploration can come after.

lol, i think you two have a history. Frank and Fox used to do this on my posts all the time.
so, specifically, what makes space exploration so great that is is "vital" to continue it? How would civilization decline because of a halt in space exploration?

It would be a symptom of a general loss of nerve.
It won't happen anyway.

Assuming you are right, which I'm okay with, you have my apologies.
I find it hard to believe though because I never, ever underestimate anybody. To do so is ridiculous.
Maybe it's simply word use or some other cultural incongruence which can be worked on.
I once read a thing about Brahmins to do with ladies who couldn't get a son with their husbands and went to the temple to sort it out.
Is that true?

I just don't like the idea that we're helpless against an asteroid.

couldn't an oppenent argue that an asteroid would be more of a defense agains space than space exploration?
