My parents, especially my mother, would often get angry at me. I didn't want to be like them. But now I realize, too late for me, that expressing your anger is better than keeping it inside and becoming vengeful and mean.
Assert yourself. Stop being a coward. Now. You don't know how freaking important it is.

Anger is a common emotion. I think most people aren't taught good communication skills and anger boils over. It's ok to express anger in constructive ways. What isn't so good is internalizing put downs and negative emotions.
In particular, telling oneself to stop being a coward isn't helpful. There can be many instances that holding anger back is more beneficial than letting loose.
