@Lash,
You'rehe parents of the murdered Sandy Hook children deserve to be vilified and threatened.

You're right it didn't exist in a vacuum, it came from a background of the far right fetishing free speech, a world of alternative facts where lies are given as much repect as the truth and the Holocaust is unproven.

@neptuneblue,
Decorum and Grace is only demanded of the left.

The far right should be allowed to harass, insult and generally persecute the parents of murdered children and the left isn't even allowed to comment on that.

That's the warped world these fascists live in.

Speech has it's consequences.

I’ve agreed many times in these pages that the marketplace may exact a price on speech, but a billion dollars? For stupid words?

Again, excessive.

Suuuure! Inciting your audience into a violent frenzy should be protected. Stupid words? His stupid sewerage lies have directly (NOT INDIRECTLY) inspired his audience to send death threats towards these parents. You're implication is that they should shake that off and be grateful that Alex Jone's free speech is 1000% protected while their lives are potentially hanging by a thread.

I think greater punishment (by far) should be exacted on *perpetrators*. I also think actually *inciting* people to violence is a far cry from just a stupid statement that some idiot acted on. Acting violently on ideas is what makes wrong happen.

I disagree with your assessment. Seems like a bit of emotional hyperbole.

These clampdowns on speech are fine with you because you hate the guy.

I hate the guy too, but I know that protecting my speech requires me to protect speech I hate.

Punish the people who take violent action. Why is that so hard?

I also feel that this level of overblown censure of speech starts out being palatable for the masses—choose an easy target—a fat, screaming asshole conspiracy theorist who besmirched murdered children.

Then, the censure is widely accepted. The principle is approved.

In time, the government begins using this now accepted principle of speech censure to silence criticism.

@Lash,
Lash. He wasn't fined for stupid words. He was made to compensate for the damage he did. The punitive aspect takes up about half the total award. This is a pretty standard thing.

Can I have your personal information, so I can tell everybody about what a liar you are and how your children don't exist, so I can get thousands of shitheads in this country to contact you and threaten to kill you?

Because that's what Alex did to generate content and buzz to make 100's of millions of dollars. Criminals do not get to benefit from the cash from their crimes, why should Alex be an exception.

Talking of crisis actors, loads of people were hospitalised with heatstroke at a Trump rally in Arizona.

As global warming is a myth, these people are crisis actors and should be vilified as much, if not more, as the parents of Sandy Hook victims.

@tsarstepan,
When I first moved to Austin in 1999, he had a show on cable access. It was a blacked out studio: on light blaring down on a Costco 5' folding table, a folding chair and Alex. No guests, no music, no videos. Just Alex moaning about the Black Hawk helicopters from an airforce base in San Antonio running up and down I-35 practicing strafing runs on the traffic below.

I thought he was a comedian.

Satire publication The Onion buys Alex Jones’ Infowars
at auction with help from Sandy Hook families

“The dissolution of Alex Jones’ assets and the death of Infowars is the justice we have long awaited and fought for,” Robbie Parker, whose daughter Emilie was killed in the 2012 shooting in Connecticut, said in a statement provided by his lawyers.

The Onion acquired the conspiracy theory platform’s website; social media accounts; studio in Austin, Texas; trademarks; and video archive. The sale price was not immediately disclosed. The Onion said its “exclusive launch advertiser” will be the gun violence prevention organization Everytown for Gun Safety.

“Everytown will continue to raise awareness on InfoWars’ channels about gun violence prevention and present actual solutions to our nation’s gun violence crisis, including bipartisan, common-sense measures and public safety initiatives backed by Everytown,” The Onion said in a statement Thursday.
