Suffering sexual assault "within the scope of her duties". A civilian Navy engineer's lawsuit was dismissed as a workers' compensation issue. The victim says a ship captain used a master key to enter her locked bedroom while she slept and assaulted her.
Elsie Dominguez, now 35, was first assistant engineer aboard the USNS Carson City when she says Capt. Yamil Sanchez Padilla assaulted her in December 2021. She reported it the next morning.
Dominguez says she then spent nearly two more years living in the same cabin, eventually installing a deadbolt. She struggled to get consistent therapy while deployed and later took a year of unpaid leave to recover, losing her health insurance. The captain remained on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
Coast Guard prosecutors eventually filed a sexual-misconduct complaint, but withdrew the case after Sanchez Padilla surrendered his merchant mariner credentials.
Dominguez sued the government, arguing the Navy failed to protect and care for her. But a judge dismissed the case after the Labor Department ruled the alleged rape occurred within the scope of her employment and therefore belonged under the federal workers’ compensation system.
The assault predates Pete Hegseth’s tenure as defense secretary. But the ruling lands amid growing evidence that women are losing ground in his Pentagon.
Hegseth has argued women should not serve in ground combat, abolished a 74-year-old advisory committee on women in the military as a “divisive feminist agenda,” fired the Navy’s first female chief, and this summer removed nine officers from a promotion list...including all three women selected for one-star admiral.

Chicago, 1968

During the four-day convention - the most violent in U.S. history - police and National Guardsmen clashed with protesters, and hundreds of people, including innocent bystanders, were beaten by the Chicago police. The violence even spilled into the convention hall, as guards roughed up delegates and members of the press.
Phil Ochs was arrested in Chicago.
Phil was in Chicago to help plan and participate in the Youth International Party's (also known as Yippie) "Festival of Life" protest in Lincoln Park. He was among a core group of organizers arrested as they tried to publicize their own candidate for president, a pig. (Phil had paid an Illinois farmer for the pig named Pigasis.)
Phil witnessed all of the violence and chaos in Chicago as the Democratic establishment, guarded by a small army of Mayor Richard J. Daley's troops, chose pro-Vietnam war candidate Hubert Humphrey. The singer saw it as the "final death of democracy in America."
In the funereal track "William Butler Yeats Visits Lincoln Park," Phil Ochs sang about the bleak scene in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention:
“As I went out one evening to take the evening air
I was blessed by a blood-red moon
In Lincoln Park the dark was turning
I spied a fair young maiden and a flame was in her eyes
And on her face lay the steel blue skies

Something came out this week that deserves way more attention than it's getting.
An X account called "Data Republican" — who got popular during the DOGE saga — was handed a leak by Under Secretary of State Sarah Rogers. She thought she was being set up to leak classified material and go to prison. She wasn't; the redactions were all normal.
But here's the part that matters: in sorting out that mess, it came out that Data Republican is a paid Special Government Employee, hired by the Pentagon back in July. It took a lot of pushing just to get the government to confirm she's on the payroll at all — and they still won't say what she's actually being paid to do.
Think about what that means. If the Pentagon is using taxpayer money to pay "independent" influencers on X to push partisan talking points, that's not just a bad look — that's a Hatch Act problem, and it's your money funding it.
The question I can't stop asking: how many other blue-check accounts putting out pro-administration talking points are actually on the federal payroll right now?

A few months ago I would have said, "No way." Now I;m bracing myself.

Putin has made threats against the UK, and it's not the first time he's threated to use nuclear weapons.

I think the US is currently matching rhetoric.

It's true; the centrists running the Democratic Party have chosen their November strategy, and it's to campaign against a podcaster. Even the GOP isn't this stupid. On the other hand, it's probably the most effective thing they could do to squander a blue wave, at least since 2024. And when they lose elections they should have easily won, their consultants will have still made bank, and the defeated will go home with fat, unspent campaign coffers. So ... status quo.

I grew up in the New Deal's hey-day. I watched hope burgeon and then both parties steadily killed it off. Every year I became more disgusted as capitalists killed every social program.

If I was a political party trying to intentionally throw the midterms to the republicans what would I be doing differently than what establishment dems are doing right now by tripling down on pro Israel candidates and making the whole election cycle about a twitch streamer?

ALL but one of Israel's desalinization plants is temporarily down. I wonder how often that happens?

This is PATHETIC. House Democrats are introducing a resolution condemning Democratic Socialists — not Trump, not Republicans, their own progressive wing — as their first order of business back from a five-week recess.
Five weeks of paid vacation — that's more paid vacation than most Americans see in an entire year, and this is the fight they came back ready to have.
Not the shutdown. Not healthcare. Not the guy dismantling the government from the Oval Office. Democratic Socialists. The ones who keep winning their primaries.
Reps. Josh Gottheimer, Hillary Scholten, Jared Moskowitz, and Tom Suozzi are leading it, answering a Republican demand that Democrats go on record against the DSA "in any form."
Leadership said yes.
Summer Lee and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez already sit in Congress as dues-paying DSA members. Five more DSA-backed candidates just won Democratic primaries in safely blue seats — Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, Chris Rabb, Melat Kiros, and Donavan McKinney — and are all but guaranteed to join them in January.
So the base is moving left and delivering wins, and leadership's big comeback move is a resolution putting distance between itself and the people doing the winning.
Democrats will always fight progressives harder than they've ever fought Trump.
This is spineless. Vote them out

What's telling is that they have to call themselves "Democratic" Socialists.

Over here the Labour Party has been known as Socialist for a long time, although not so much since Tony Blair.

They didn't need to call themselves democratic because Socialism is democratic by definition.

Unlike Republics, and Republicans where Democracy doesn't really have to play a part, look at the Apartheid era Republic of South Africa.

Normally when something has to call itself Democratic, it's anything but, East Germany and North Korea spring to mind.

That's not the case here, Socialism and Collectivism in general has been so vilified by the ruling classes there's a need to redefine it.

Socialists are all over the map with self labels. They can't find one that sounds warm and fuzzy, but true to their ideals. The centrist and right wing Democrats pursue Republican policies, they just don't seem as nuts as Trump. They wouldn't have attacked Iran. They make a show of balancing the budget. Other than that, they wouldn't recognize the New Deal if it bit them on the ass.

If Democrats had arrested Trump as soon as he left office that first time, he would not have been able to run again. They thought they could plav it with the public for four years and it backfired.
