Moore Says Doc Already Has HMOs Spooked
Sat Jul 30, 9:24 AM ET

Michael Moore says his next documentary already has HMOs quaking in their boots. Moore has not yet begun shooting the film, "Sicko," but his planned critique of the nation's health care system, he says, is making "freaked-out" HMOs warn employees what to do if approached by the filmmaker.

"At this point we haven't shot anything yet and they're totally discombobulated," Moore said at the inaugural Traverse City Film Festival. Moore, who lives near Traverse City, founded the film festival with local movie buffs to showcase excellent films.

Moore described good movies as a bridge across the political divide for people "tired of the hate, tired of the yelling, tired of ... the screamfests, the talk radio."

Though the festival is showing films like "Casablanca" and the upcoming Bill Murray movie "Broken Flowers," Moore's involvement sparked a conservative Texas group to sponsor a rival festival showing Hollywood classics and conservative-themed movies. That festival was to begin Saturday.

While Moore's Traverse City Film Festival puts politics on the back-burner for a weekend, he makes no apology for making politically themed films.

"When in this great democracy did 'political' become a dirty word?"

They are propably ready to duck. They don't want to have to answer the questions most Americans have on their mind about our out-of-date, creaky, prejudicial health system.

I can't wait to see those bastards squirm. The pharmaceutical companies are the ones I want to see exposed. F*cking scumbags.

No, money grubbing f*cking scumbags.

I don't have a lot of compelling evidence about my health insurance as I got tied up with a good medical group who really gets in and pushes. It's also the administration of your doctor's office that can be really slow, inaccurate and aggravating. However, I've gotten first hand accounts of some really despicable screw-ups by health providers. Doctor, heal thyself!

I'm very interested in seeing this. I was a student of the medical field and am tired of seeing the elderly having to pay insane prices for their medications. As a physical therapy student, it really frustrates me when people are only allowed a "previously decided" number of visits to their PT, because their HMO's think a person only needs a few visits to cure them. More often than not, people aren't completely healed when they leave their therapy. But maybe this is another topic for another forum. Smile Just my humble 2 cents. Smile

Welcome to A2K, OperaGhost! (You wouldn't be in Mozart's "Don Giovani," would you).

I've heard disturbing stories told of seniors waiting so long for tests and diagnosis that they became progressively ill and some just didn't make it. It's not getting any better, either.

Hi, Lightwizard, thanks for the welcome! Actually I get OperaGhost from the name Eric, the Phantom of the Opera used in his letters to the Paris Opera House. Smile I don't know about Mozart. Smile

It is very true about not only seniors, but any patient having to wait that long. Many HMO's require referrals from your primary physician before you can see a specialist. It can take anywhere from a day to even two months before some patients can be seen by their doctors. Personally, I believe the referral idea needs to be brought up by Moore, but maybe he'll have even more important topics to discuss.

It's more than a few days for referrals. I asked for a referral for an eye exam over two weeks ago. Still no referral. Ya just have to keep buggin' 'em.

I was at my HMO hospital today, and they had cleared all the hallways of extra stuff like crash carts and laundry baskets. I asked what was up, why it looked so empty, and they said "It's so Michael Moore can fit down the aisles".

Well, then, I guess they are welcoming him in so he can properly expose them.

Yea, cjhsa has claimed time-and-again that he's a svelt 150 pounder with a face that should be in the movies. But thereby hangs another story...one exclusively relegated to fantasizing.

If Michael Moore is a liar, how come he hasn't had his arse sued?

Let us know what he has lied about.

Okay - but just name ONE thing. Top of your list will do.

Seriously, I'm interested.

They can't come up with any lawsuit for reporting any false information. I'm sure the right wing has scoured the Earth for something and they've manufactured hundreds of so-called "counter information" sites including dubious blogs (thoroughly discredited by not only Moore but an equal number of factual information sites they won't bother to look up) to try and discredit Moore. They don't put their money where their mouth is.

Moore is a modern day hero. He can be called names, but not discredited.

Moore is used to the ad hominem attacks and it just shows how desperate they are.
