LETTER OF THE DAY COLUMN

Hello Adler Nation

The Edmonton Sun has published a letter from an American who has visited Canada and got the feeling that our country has a dim view of his country. He has lashed out and unlike many others who do, he has signed his name. Pleae read the email along with the editor's brief response in brackets, and let me know what you think by emailing me, and responding to the poll question on this web site.

Make it a Great Day and Thanks for listening to Adler On Line

Column: Letter of the Day

AS AN average American citizen invited to visit Canada for a
wedding, I was at first impressed by your country. However, after
personally witnessing several times in a few short hours your
country's anti-American attitude first-hand and the extremes that
your citizens will go to to show that we Americans are not welcome,
I am forever now an advocate of anything that will harm Canadian
citizens or your economy. I will now purposefully go out of my way
to show my displeasure and my newfound hatred of any Canadians I
encounter in America. It is now my sincere wish that Canada is the
next bombing target of the terrorists and that no less than one
million of your arrogant citizens are instantly murdered.

Steven P. Chaney

(You heartless bastard.)

I listened to this radio address and became curious how one can come to these sentiments.
It was said that the American in question was exposed to anti-war sentiments in conversations at a wedding. The response by this individual surely elevates the anti-American disposition many people around the world currently feel because of this very kind of position.
"Support us, love us, and appreciate us, or I will wish hell upon you, your loved ones, your country, and your economy."

Tough to rally any kind of support when you have these kinds of people writing to a large Canadian newspaper.

Yeah really! That's just another reason I don't do weddings or funerals, you meet the worst examples of humanity at both.

This one person is what you should say. This was one persons letter and does not by any means represent the majority of Americans.

Ahhh, yes. Thank-you.
I needed another reason to stay away from weddings.

...and I sincerely believe that.
The author of the letter should have understood that as well before he wished death upon millions of our citizens in his declaration.

What strikes me as simply amazing is the poll that went along with the link...

Accompanied by this letter wishing the violent deaths of a million Canadians is a poll asking if "Anti-Americanism is creating a backlash".

Forty four percent of respondants-- the highest of all the options-- agreed that it was.Could you imagine Americans responding to a letter this way?

In contrast, only 30% of respondants answered that the letter writer is "a twit".

Canadians are way too polite.

Must be why gun-related deaths in Canada is so low compared to the US.

"I'm really angry with you. May I shoot you?"
"No."
"Okay, then."

Seriously, I wonder if the British in general would respond in such a manner?

Can we get that guy to visit our country so we can find out?

Too bad that he took anti-war discussion as anti-American sentiment. They are two different topics. I am guessing that he doesn't care for some of his countrymen either since something that would kill a million Canadians would surely affect those border states as well.

Good thing that the wedding wasn't in Quebec. He might have thought that the language was a special code to talk about him.

To the other 99.98% of Americans, you are welcome to visit us in Canada any time.

I want to know what you all did to this poor guy. What "extremes" do Canadians go to?

Maybe they really were speaking in French and he was feeling left out and just a little paranoid.

I have never in any time visiting Canada felt anti-American hatred. Maybe I don't go far enough up north.

I'm not really surprised that he felt intimidated. From an outsiders point of view, I have the impression that the pro/anti war feeling in the USA is about fifty fifty (just my impression, could be wrong), so a pro war guy on his home turf will not encounter much opposition.

Once he steps out onto foreign soil, however, it must come as a massive shock to the system, to find that he is in the minority.

By the style of his rant, I would estimate that he is about sixteen, either mentally, physically or both.

Shame, as it tends to tar his fellow Countrymen with the same brush, and I am certain that they are just as horrified by his rantings as the rest of us.

Although not for some years I visited Canada on business many times. Both English and French Canada. Being in English speaking Canada was much the same as being in the US. However, in Montreal and Quebec there was open animosity against anyone who was English speaking, Canadian or American. But that is the French for you.

As to Canadians being anti-American at this Juncture. Since Bush became president the entire world has become anti-American. Why would anyone expect the Canadians would be any different. .

However the angry man [being polite] who wrote the letter is way out of line.

He was prolly one of those "ugly Americans" at the wedding, and people reacted naturally and ignored him. He didn't get the attention he was expecting, and went home with his tail between his legs - I suspect. Been to Canada many times. Love Canada and its people; never had a bad experience. Can't say the same for my home, the US.

I can't speak for all Canadians (I am not the Prime Minister :-o ) but I thank you for your nice comments about my country, CI

I have been to the U.S. many times and I can honestly say that I have not had a bad experience. Well, there was that one time in Detroit.......

I would hazard a guess that this is the first time this twit has ever ventured further than the US border.

Interesting also that he spells his own last name incorrectly.

I've known and interacted with enough Canadians to know there are no fewer a-holes in Canada than anywhere else. There is definitly no deficit.
