My dad is having some tests done tomorrow and they told him since he will be sedated, he can't eat anything from noon on today. His tests begin at 10 am tomorrow. He is a diabetic. I am a little concerned about his not eating for that long. Any words of comfort on this one? I am going to be worrying about my dad all night.
My husband is diabetic and I'm quite used to the fasting before procedures and surgery.
Your dad will not be ingesting any calories. As long as he's not taking insulin he won't be burning a dangerous amount of calories.
You are hereby soothed. Hold your dominion.
No, he takes pills...I just know how weird he gets if he doesn't eat regularly....poor mom...
Thanks Noddy!
Not sure of the action of whatever pills he uses, but I would do some periodic monitoring to be sure he doesn't get too far into hypoglycemia. Depending on the tests, maintenance doses of glucose might not be a problem.
Hopefully, his doctor will have some awareness of the situation, but problems may arise when some specialists prescribe tests or medications without actually reading the information they have been given. I have filled out numerous patient histories for various doctors, only to have them ask (among other things) if I have diabetes, thus, proving they haven't even glanced at the records. Call that lamebrain physician right now.
Thanks guys...I just get all paranoid because I know things can go south pretty fast sometimes.
They are not out to get you, Bella. They are just not paying attention. You have to bird dog them every step of the way.
Trust Me.
