WASHINGTON — An FBI informant has been charged with lying to his handler about ties between President Joe Biden, his son Hunter and a Ukrainian energy company.

Alexander Smirnov falsely told FBI agents in June 2020 that executives associated with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid Hunter and Joe Biden $5 million each in 2015 or 2016, prosecutors said Thursday.

Smirnov told the FBI that a Burisma executive had claimed to have hired Hunter Biden to "protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems," prosecutors said.

@Lash,
Of course, the circumstances are still unclear, but the timing is likely to be inconvenient for Putin shortly before his staged re-election.

But the core of the news will not change: Vladimir Putin 's best-known, strongest and most charismatic opponent has died (during a walk) in custody weeks before the presidential election

@Walter Hinteler,
And, murdering Navalny would be a stupid move especially right now, as you say.

With the West’s administration-adjacent news speakers already claiming Putin had him murdered, makes reasonable people wonder exactly what happened.

Everything what Putin did or ordered regarding Navalny was stupid, murder by instalment.

@Walter Hinteler,
Why do you think he returned from Germany?
(Not a rhetorical question.)

Navalny responded to this question: ""I have my country and my faith. And I don't want to give up my country or my faith."

Can you provide an example? I haven't heard any news people saying that "Putin had him murdered" only that putting him in the Gulag was effectively a death sentence.

Trump ordered to pay $350 million for fraudulent business practices in New York
Quote:
A New York judge has ordered former President Donald Trump and executives at the Trump Organization to pay nearly $364 million in a civil fraud case, handing a win to New York Attorney General Letitia James, who sued Trump and his associates after a three-year investigation.

The Friday decision from Judge Arthur Engoron orders Trump and his flagship organization to pay the bulk of that amount: $355 million. Trump's two sons and cofedendents, Eric and Donald Jr., are each liable for $4 million. Allen Weisselberg, a former Trump Organization executive, is liable for $1 million.

"Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological. They are accused only of inflating asset values to make more money. The documents prove this over and over again. This is a venial sin, not a mortal sin," Engoron wrote in the court filing. "Yet, defendants are incapable of admitting the error of their ways."

@hightor,
Here’s Biden doing it. Min 5:10.

If another, more appropriate thread is open, I’ll put a few more there.

@Lash,
Thanks, but there's nothing at 5:10 – that's where it ends. Where does he say that "Putin had him murdered"? And is Biden really an "administration-adjacent news speaker"? That seems an odd way to refer to him.

Over at Fox this afternoon, it's as you'd expect...
-It will only help Trump in the election.
-This just makes citizens even more aware that the law and the government can come after them too.

But think about this one...

Ari Fleischer tells Fox News viewers they can make the federal criminal cases go away against Trump by merely making sure he's elected president, since Trump can just have his DOJ drop those cases.

Trump lashes out after New York fraud ruling

Source: The Hill

Former President Trump on Friday lashed out against a judge’s ruling banning him from running companies in New York for three years and ordering him to pay more than $350 million as part of a closely watched fraud case.

In a series of posts on his Truth Social platform after the decision, Trump railed against judge Arthur Engoron and said there “were No Victims, No Damages, No Complaints.”

He went on to further criticize Engoron and New York Attorney General Letitia James in multiple posts, saying the New York case was a “witch hunt,” and that he was fined “$355 Million based on nothing other than having built a GREAT COMPANY.”

Trump, in another post, called the decision an “unAmerican judgment against me, my family, and my tremendous business.”

Your interlocutor has a precedent dramatic exemplar:

In his strategy to foment suspicion and discord and thus to weaken Othello, Iago claims Cassio is already courting Othello's wife Desdemona: "They met so near with their lips that their breaths embraced together."

@blatham,
And let me add for the sake of clarity that although Iago is commonly equated in the scholarly literature with Satan, I certainly wouldn't insist that Lash is Satan-adjacent, even if others might do so.

@hightor,
Sorry! My bad on the time.

I’d intended to bring news people I’d heard make the claim. At that point, I didn’t know Biden had actually done it. Made my point more effectively.

One thing I heard on a show today was that Trump maybe facing up to $1 billion from various policemen and others that were harmed in the Jan6 insurrection. I find this hard to believe, wouldn't Trump be protected by claiming this was an official matter?

Then again, it was an attempted coup, which would put the act outside official business and therefore leave him liable?
