Edward Snowden swears allegiance to Russia and receives passport, lawyer says

Source: Washington Post

Edward Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor who leaked information about U.S. surveillance programs, swore an oath of allegiance to Russia and has collected his Russian passport, his lawyer told state media on Friday.

“Edward received a Russian passport yesterday and took the oath in accordance with the law,” lawyer Anatoly Kucherena said, according to Russia’s Interfax news agency. “He is, of course, happy, thanking the Russian Federation for the fact that he received citizenship,” he continued. “And most importantly, under the Constitution of Russia, he can no longer be extradited to a foreign state.”

Snowden, 39, is wanted by Washington on espionage charges. He argues that his actions were in the interests of the United States. In any case, his revelations exposed the breadth of U.S. digital spying programs and altered the public’s understanding of technology, privacy and digital security.

It’s unclear whether Snowden swore the oath of allegiance at the same time as he was granted a passport, but the two are common procedures when foreigners become Russian citizens. The text includes swearing “to protect the freedom and independence of the Russian Federation, to be loyal to Russia, to respect its culture, history and traditions,” and to promise to “perform the duties of a citizen of the Russian Federation for the good of the state and society.”

Prosecutor: Evidence shows Trump 'explicitly' OK'd tax fraud
Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — In the end, it wasn’t a last-minute smoking gun but a prosecutor insisting that evidence shows Donald Trump was aware of a scheme that his Trump Organization’s executives hatched to avoid paying personal income taxes on millions of dollars worth of company-paid perks.

After telling jurors on Thursday that Trump “knew exactly what was going on” with the scheme, Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Joshua Steinglass followed up by citing trial evidence and testimony that he said made clear “Mr. Trump is explicitly sanctioning tax fraud.”

Steinglass, speaking on the last day before deliberations at the Trump Organization’s criminal tax fraud, showed jurors a lease Trump signed for one executive’s Manhattan apartment and a memo the former president initialed authorizing a pay cut for another executive who got perks.

He also cited Weisselberg’s claim, during his three days of testimony, that he told Trump he would pay him back after Trump agreed to cover his grandchildren’s hefty private school tuition cost. Weisselberg then adjusted his payroll records to cut his pre-tax salary by the cost of the tuition.

Literal evidence from flight manifests shows Bill Clinton flew to Epstein's island 15 times escorting minors.

The Clinton Foundation's main income stream was in child sex slave trading.

This makes the whole family complicit, including the daughter.

No wonder they don't want to see what that laptop holds.

@Builder,
Well I’m sure the new sessions of the House will devote effort to getting to the bottom of that laptop once and for all. Then we can all see the evil the democrats have been hiding, and have justice.

Not that important, really. We all know what Hunter and the Big Guy have been doing in the Ukraine and China.

It ain't pretty, but that business as usual.

It's why the dems couldn't field anyone other than creepy Joe Biden.

Needed an insider on the job. One that they could tell what to say.

The rule-making arm of the Democratic National Committee on Friday voted to approve a proposal to drastically reshape the 2024 presidential nominating calendar and make South Carolina the first state to hold a primary, followed by Nevada and New Hampshire on the same day a few days later, and then Georgia and Michigan before Super Tuesday.

This is amazing news. I'd rather it were New Hampshire that got booted instead of Iowa, but if they do make Michigan #5 I will start voting for pro-gun Democrats again.

That wouldn't be my advise. False accusations of racism should never be taken seriously.

It is reasonable for people to be outraged when progressives falsely accuse them of racism.

Progressives really do hate white people.

I wonder how many white suburbanites have already formed vigilante groups to quietly protect their neighborhoods in response to all this BLM nonsense.

I'm glad that I live well away from any urban areas.

If the United States hadn't been committing war crimes Snowden wouldn't have had to blow the whistle.

The war criminals are the problem, not those who expose them.

@izzythepush,
Snowden did not expose any war crimes on the part of the US or anyone else.

What he did was undermine our efforts to detect terrorist attacks before they happened. It is likely that some of the post-Snowden terrorist attacks in Europe would have been prevented if not for Snowden's betrayal.

Yes it would. Especially since you would be lying about her record.

Posting about her behavior instead of addressing her arguments is very much an ad hominin fallacy.

This would be the case even if the comments about her behavior were accurate. (They do not seem to be.)

@oralloy,
Why are you spending so much time engaging in this third party criticism? You weren't mentioned in the posts, they weren't addressed to you, they don't concern any points that you've made or any of the topics that normally interest you. This is a variation on the sort of stuff that "creepy" Builder refers to as "dog-piling" – jumping into conversations to make snarky comments and insults while constantly harping on other people's posting style. You're capable of better. It's tiresome.

It’s official! South Carolina will now be the first primary, Nevada and New Hampshire tie for second.

I think this was an exceptionally astute move. It rewards the democrats’ loyal base, and gives them a running start to start gathering momentum at the outset of the election season.
