Don't be fooled by America's strong jobs numbers.
The recovery is far from over.

Even though the US job market is rapidly improving, the economy is still far from back-to-normal.
Employers are expected to have added 700,000 jobs in June. Even if that holds true, the nation
will still be down 6.9 million jobs compared with February 2020...

@Region Philbis,
Yes and no. I found another place where people talk about literature and speak other languages other than English a week ago. Yet I haven't gotten around to talking to people there. That forum also doesn't have far-left liberals , I suppose.

I have been considering learning another language, say, Japanese or French.

@goldberg,
From your posts I doubt you live in the States since you get us so wrong. If you did, I would recommend Spanish since it plus english gives you nearly all the western hemisphere, half the world.

@MontereyJack,
I've heard that just four languages will give you access to most of the world: English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi.

@oralloy,
I've heard don't know if it's TRUE that Chinese has one written language tho many mutually intelligible spoken versions. Cantonese and mandarin Chinese are supposed to be quite different.

@MontereyJack,
Look at it like this…

With English in England you have a number of dialects – Cockney, Scouse, Geordie etc.

With English in America you have a number of dialects – Texan, Bostonian, Floridian etc.

With Chinese in China you have a number of dialects – Mandarin, Shanghainese, Cantonese etc.

@oralloy,
Recommend Spanish to you too leasyfor enish speakers lotta loan words and and cognates and the sounds are similar tho they think our accents arent so euphonium. Plus the food is great. Try paltas rellenas stuffed with shrimp an hour away from the Pacific in ima Peru for pure ambrosia..

@BillW,
Yeah but our dialects are mutually intelligible, at least mostly. Chinese ones supposedly are so different they arent.

@MontereyJack,
I think mandarin is the language of the elite and not allowed for the commoner. Of course, that was when they had emperors.

@oralloy,
I'm not a polyglot as well. Just speak two languages. I once spent several months learning German to no avail. That hurts.

@MontereyJack,
Thanks for the tip. I guess I'm not going to learn Spanish since I have no plans to move to a Spanish-speaking nation to work. I have narrowed my choice down to either Japanese or French. Maybe I could consider learning German again. I actually spent months learning German years ago. To my consternation, I failed to get the hang of it.

@BillW,
If we’re talking about languages can I just point out that my son speaks fluent Spanish, Portuguese, German, Mandarin, Japanese and British Sign Language.

He can also get by in Cantonese and French.

@izzythepush,
Germans also use this word, you prat who supports Labour. The thinking goes, you can even find the word chow or the expression long time no see in American English, in spite of the fact that such words and expressions are originally from China.

I think you are too old to learn another language, not me. I'm not an old geezer like you.
