What is the best way to contain and get rid of flies and other winged pests without flypaper?

Hello. As of the time of the posting of this it's summertime 2020. There are a few flies and other winged pests flying and buzzing around my den and kitchen. I don't know where they came from but they probably flew in when I opened my back door.

I had to get rid of a pot I cooked with because there were maggots in it.

What is the best way to contain and get rid of flies and other winged pests without flypaper?

I made a solution of water, dish liquid and fruit-flavored powdered drink and put it in an open can and left it out in a corner on my kitchen floor. I'm hoping the bugs will take the bait.

Please help. Thank you.

Rid your house of their breeding place, which could be a number of things you have to be detective enough to find.

@edgarblythe,
This includes getting rid of standing water (if you have a birdbath, empty it, that sort of thing) and wrap up garbage well.

What will this do?

Shocked Shocked Shocked

So you left a pot with rotting food in it long enough for flies to lay eggs, and for them to form maggots?

I honestly have no words.

Now you're going to leave liquid sugar sitting in your kitchen to attract roaches, ants, etc.

I honestly feel I am going to vomit if I keep thinking about this.

@chai2,
No there was no rotting food in the pot. There was dirty water in it, which I dumped out. There were maggots in the pot afterwards. I'm not leaving a can with liquid sugar in it on the floor in my kitchen.

I've never had roaches in my kitchen. Thank God.

@cherrie,
Bugs are attracted to sweet things. I didn't have any fruit-scented dish liquid so I used some of my mother's special dietary peach-flavored powered drink mix.

Bugs are attracted to anything organic. I need to make sure I don't leave any waste material around.

@JGoldman10,
What do you think is in powered drink mix?

Like Cherie asked, what do you hope to accomplish by putting a can with sugar water in it on the floor where it will attract roaches, ants and vermin?

Get a fly swatter or use a rolled up newspaper and stop leaving dirty dishes around.

Clean your house.

@chai2,
I had a swatter. I don't know what happened to it.

@cherrie,
What will the bait do? I'm hoping the bugs will fly into it.

I partially cleaned my kitchen up. I got the trash off the floor. I don't know where the bugs went but at least the annoying buzzing stopped.

@JGoldman10,
Maybe your kitchen was even too disgusting for them to hang around.

@cherrie,
Ha ha. No I had some weird stinky mess in a bag on the kitchen floor. That's probably what attracted the bugs.

Yes - it would attract them.

How about an electric bug zapper? If anything it would be some entertainment!

There are other contraptions that are electric that you set up and not sure how - but it attracts bug and ZAP electrifies them on contact.

Like these things

Dollar tree probably has them for 4 for a dollar.

The electric hand zapper is about 5 or 6 bucks - you might get lucky and find it at dollar store for a buck this time of year.

@Linkat,
Oh God.
Don’t suggest going out to buy one.

You know that’s going to turn into yet another long drawn out ordeal.

He can just fold up a bunch of the fast food paper bags he has laying around. The grease and hardened processed cheese product on the bags will also attract the flys.

@chai2,
See they got them at dollar tree - I was wrong though each one is a dollar, but bonus they are decorative.
