can you answer this question?:

Does 'goverment' use 'force' if someone doesn't obey? If so what do you think about that? And where does the authority come from to use this force?

The video says everything.... Reggie is asking for the overthrow of the Roman government. He asks rhetorically "What have the Romans done for us?" In the end, these anarchists have to admit that the Roman government (which they are there to overthrow) has actually done quite a lot for them.

It is a humorous way to make the point that government does a lot for us.

1. Yes, government forces us to "obey".

2. In my opinion, a good government also provides us with rights (things that it will not take away).

3. Governments authority comes from the assent of those being governed. Sometimes this is at the barrel of a gun, sometimes it is because government gives us good stuff, sometimes it is because government reflects or values.

@maxdancona,
"Governments authority comes from the assent of those being governed."

is this really so? so what you are saying is that people 'give' the 'government; permission for the things they do, right?

@Palandre,
There are many different forms of government. It started with hunter-gather societies that needed to figure out how to live and work together. Humans are social creatures, and communities that didn't organize ended up dead.

I currently live in an advanced modern democracy (actually it is not a pure democracy, but I will still call it for lack of a better term).

I was born into this democracy. I didn't have a choice. That being said, I think our system of government is pretty good. And it gives me a lot of benefits that I appreciate. These include....

- A stable economic system that allows me to work and buy things. I don't have to hunt for my own food. With money I can do the profession I do well as a specialist. Then I can buy things without having to worry about how the exchange will work.

- A set of laws that enforce shared values. If my neighbors are shooting their kids with a cross-bow, I don't have to sit idly by. The police will come and stop them, and the government will give the kids a chance.

- A set of guaranteed rights. I can say "Trump is a moron" without any fear of repercussion even though Trump is the president of the United States.

- A set of institutions that all work together. We have a highway system, a public school system, a set of hospitals that function with shared values. We have protections against pollution, and food safety and diseases.

I could go on.

I am happy to assent to this government. It works. It provides me with things I need for a decent modern lifestyle. And, I can't think of a better alternative.

"- A stable economic system that allows me to work and buy things."

Are you by chance in jail for breaking one of those laws you seem to feel are unnessary?

I am happy to assent to this government.

Can you actually do this? Delegate your power to a 'government'?

Yes, really.

If I have a 20 dozen eggs, and I need a chair, what do I do?

Without a stable economic I would go to Phillip who has a chair, but Phillip doesn't need eggs. Phillip wants a hat. So I have to go to Phyllis who has hats and wants eggs, but she only needs 2 dozen eggs.... and doesn't think that is a fair trade for a hat... but she needs yarn. So I find someone who has yarn and needs eggs... then I trade yarn plus some eggs for a hat which I then bring back to Phillip (remember Phillip)... but a hat isn't a fair trade for a chair, so Phillip also wants a hammer.

Do you see the problem?

Government solves that problem.

Government solves that problem by printing little green rectangles. I get green rectangles (actually it is a digital representation of green rectangles) from my employer every couple of weeks.

I can use the green rectangles to buy things at the store, or to pay my rent, or to get internet service.

Since the government backs these green rectangles we all agree that they have value. That means that we can all exchange them, in any denomination, and the problem I outlined in my previous post doesn't happen.

oh, right. You mean money that is made out of thin air and because of that creates huge problems for its population.

Not very good, is it?

And btw the FED printed a few trillion dollars, so we are waiting for the hyperinflation\

Not very good is it?

What would you replace it with? The modern monetary system works very well.

The life expectancy and the standard of living for human beings is higher than at any time in history. And the amount of leisure time for human beings has increased incredibly.

What do you want as an alternative. Should we go back to the barter system ('cause that didn't work very well).

@Palandre,
You haven't come up with any alternatives.

Right now my government provides a stable economic system that allows most Americans to earn money and spend it on what they want or need

So you even have an alternative to this single governmental syst?

@maxdancona,
If you notice in this thread:

- 'Palandre' makes claims without explanation, logical argument, evidence or backup.
- He is also denying others claims without explanation, logical argument, evidence, backup, or alternative solution.

Do you honestly see any point continuing?
