What is the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist?

Hi. I am a bit confused. I was trying to schedule an appointment with a local dietician but ran into an issue with my insurance.

She is claiming my insurance doesn't cover dietician visits. However I think I read somewhere my insurance does. I need to find out and get this straight with her and my physician's office.

I thought I was trying to get in touch with a nutritionist so I could make an appointment with her.

Maybe I am getting things mixed up. What is the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist?

Are they the same thing or two different things?

I have had some health issues and concerns. I would just like to meet with some kind of health specialist - a dietician, nutritionist, or other type - who can make sure I am eating properly and can answer all my dietary and nutritional questions and address all my issues and concerns.

Please help. Thank you.

@jespah,
Hello Jespah, Happy New Year! How are you? Thank you for responding. If you don't mind me asking did you have a nice Christmas?

@izzythepush,
Pretty much! Candles were lit. The house did not burn down. Win-win!

@jespah,
To be honest it still beat going to Yorkshire. Glad I don't have to do that any more.

@jespah,
I didn't know you were Jewish. My Christmas was okay - it was the first one I ever spent alone. I was busy. I didn't get to see my mother at the rehab center like I promised her.

I was happy I got a new laptop as a belated Christmas gift?

Are there any Jews who celebrate both Hannukah and Christmas?

Do you know anyone who celebrated Kwanzaa?

@JGoldman10,
There are - I have cousins who do but they are half and half - Corinne married a Catholic guy so they've got both. I have a few other half-Jewish, half-Catholic cousins. I don't know anyone who celebrates Kwaanzaa.

And I'm sorry you didn't get to see your mom. Is she okay?

@JGoldman10,
Dieticians are regulated healthcare professionals. They need to be registered with Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). However, anybody can use the title nutritionist.

@jespah,
Yes. She is still in a nearby tehab center. I just spoke to her over the phone recently.

@JGoldman10,
That's good. And she's in the right place for care, which is a relief.

@JGoldman10,
A dietitian studies what foods you should swallow. A nutritionist studies what happens after you swallow them. Very few people know that. If you ask a doctor to refer you to a nutritionist you will get sent to a dietitian every time.

What type of health specialist deals with dietary and/or nutritional issues and concerns that is NOT a dietician or nutrionist?

As I said earlier in this thread a local dietician/nutrionist said my current insurance doesn't cover dietician/nutrionist visits when I think is incorrect. I think I read somewhere that the plan I signed up for DOES cover such visits, but I have to get this straightened out with the dietician/nutrionist and my local physician's office, when I have the time.

The specialist I want to see doesn't have to a dietician or nutrionist, just some specialist I can meet with and talk to who addresses dietary and nutritional issues and concerns.

@JGoldman10,
Jewels is right, that nutritionist is a person who will analyze a state of your body after you've become eating something for a long time.
