You will learn English the same way we did, practice, practice, practice. We, of course, had our family to practice with, your English practicing family will be the members of A2K.

Everyday try to find one or two discussions to post on, we would be very interested in knowing what the Chinese perspective is on several issues, but also look at the silly threads, the word games like the Limericks or the Answer my question with a Question. These are just for fun, but they contain real American, Australian and British English, these are not all the same.

Also, it is not a good idea to post your email in a readable form. Spam hunting software will find it.

Good luck. I hope to read many things by you on these pages.

Shen, as a former foreign language teacher who also taught some English courses, I would encourage you to avail yourself of videos and CD's or cassettes as much as possible (bec. your question makes it sound as though you're focused on improving your speaking/listening skills). Also, do you have access to any English T.V. channels or radio stations (some radio stations also come thru on the internet)? But reading, too, improves your vocabulary and grammar skills. Subscribe to such periodicals as TIME and NEWSWEEK.

And it goes without saying that the more you speak ( = practice), the more proficient you'll become.

The key is saturation: steep yourself in the language in as many ways as possible, and you can't help but make progress!

Good luck! Very Happy

Dear friends ,I'm very happy that I could read the leave words you left soon.

Have you found that the words I used are very simple ,maybe my vocabulary is very poor, more words should I recite .

I found the forum by coincidence ,slowly I fall in it ,and love the member and friends here.

I draw attention to the pronunciation of every new word.Every word of the pronunciation must be normative I think.

I always can't say the right words I want to express ,to my emotion in right words.Even the words I'm writing now.

I love english songs very much, also like to sing them.
Such as the Backstreet Boys when I was young .

And recently I get to love the Blue Boys album, the songs I want to sing ,but it's a little hard for me.

Up to this, Could you please point the errors above out ,my friend?
Every error should be pointed out ,so that I could improve fast. Also show me the right sentence instead the wrong sentence.Thank you in advance.

My MSN: [email protected] Email:[email protected]

Anything I could do for you just let me know .

Yours Davis

Shen, your English is an interesting mix of surprisingly advanced constructions with less idiomatic ones. It almost sounds like you have a "substratum" of native English... Laughing

In other words, you're doing just fine. Keep up the good work, and remember that practice makes perfect.

I can't correct your whole post, but one thing that you need to change is the commas: they go immediately at the end of the word, with no space inbetween (study their use in other posts here at a2K and you'll get the hang of it).

No, you do not have to write the same thing over, let's have a conversation instead. Okay?

Today, I went to work for a few hours, then I met some friends at a bar on a pier. There were boats of all kinds all around and lots people eating, drinking and talking. It was noisy and fun.

Later, I went for a long walk up the river. I saw many people on bicycles and skates, many others were running or walking. Some of the skaters seemed to dance to the music coming through the little earphones they wore.

My wife and I met for dinner at a quiet restaurant.

What did you do today?

Hello, englishdavis.

It is good to meet you here at Able2Know (or A2K as a lot of people call it).

I was recently on a short holiday visiting my family, so I have spent part of the evening putting the pictures of the trip onto the internet. I am going to share the photos with my friends on the weekend.

Listening, and singing along, to American and British music is a good way to catch the rhythm of the English language. It is, however, probably not the best way to learn good sentence construction.

Your written English is quite good, and I look forward to seeing/reading you again here.

I am looking forward to a nice lazy day off, but I have too much to do.

Since you asked for some corrections, here's a couple:

I love english songs very much, however dislike Chinese popular song.
I don't know why, english songs is really great for me.

Slow down a little bit, I know you think you are already too slow, but you have to look at what you are writing.

I love english songs very much, however I dislike Chinese popular songs.
I don't know why, English songs are my favorite music, especially rap music, maybe I'm a little foolish about it, I couldn't sing it fluently after practicing several times.

These are small errors. Watch how you use commas. The comma is placed next to the leading word, then there is a space, followed by the next word. See how the two commas hold the little phrase apart so we notice it?

I changed "...English songs are really great for me." because, although the words say what you wanted to say, I don't think it sounds like an English speaker of English. It's just my opinion.

Now, I am going to have breakfast and head for downtown New York City.

Oh, I forgot to say that I think diagknowz used Shen as kind of a shorthand greeting for someone from Shenzhen.

englishdavis.

We meet again, you and I. See if you can read the following:

"THE STORY OF THE BLUE WILLOW CHINA"
Long ago, in the days when China was ruled by emperors, a Chinese manderin,Tso Ling, lived in the magnificent pagoda under the branches of the apple tree on the right of the bridge, over which droops the famous willow tree, and in front of which is seen the graceful lines of the fence. Tso Ling was the father of a beautiful girl, Kwang-se, who was the promised bride of an old but wealthy merchant. The girl, however, fell in love with Chang, her father's clerk. The lovers eloped across the sea to the cottage on the island. The mandarin pursued and caught the lovers and was about to have them killed when the gods transformed them into a pair of turtle doves. These are seen gazing into each other's eyes at the top of the design.

A lengthy and old Staffordshire poem of the pattern concludes with the verse: "In the oft quoted plate two birds are perceived, High in the heaven above: These are the spirits of Chang and Kwang-se, A twin pair of ever in love".

EnglishDavis, sorry about the "Shen" part Crying or Very sad ----I was indeed thinking about where you're from, as Joe said; I was half asleep bec. it was so late at night (and today, if you find typos here, it's bec. I left my reading glasses somewhere, so my "touch" typing is really getting a workout! Evil or Very Mad ).

What is the school system like in China? I mean, first of all, how many years of school are compulsory? And then, are there 3 different school "levels" like in Europe, or what? Is it easy to flunk there, or do they just scoot you right thru all the grades as here in the U.S. where education is a joke?

Dear Joe Nation,

<I am looking forward to a nice lazy day off.>It's a nice and graceful sentence! I would keep it in my mind.

I get to know the direction of comma, just like this.No space here?

although the words say what you wanted to say, does the word"say" has the usage to express?

so we notice it? Does the interrogation should be changed into full stop?

When I finishing the post,it's already 11:11am here, and I will have a rest in the afternoon.Hope you also have a nice weekend.
Yours Davis

Dear Joe Nation,

How many hours will spend on your work? And how many on your rest time?

I have many questions about your life in New York, and what's the difference of everyday life between ShenZhen and New York?

I like the words in the film which directed by American. It's always humorous and full feelings in every dialog.

I hope I could go abroad someday after having the ability to speak fluent English.

Wish you the bust of luck! Smile

Also teach me another way of wish.Does the word in red could be changed into <to>?

Yours Davis.

For Letty.
Hello Letty,

The paragraph you left me is a little hard to understand fully.

A pair of turtle doves. What's the meaning of the word doves?I can get the meaning of a pair of turtle, why another word doves?

These are seen gazing into each other’s eyes at the top of the design. I don't understand the words? At which design?A little hard for me to understand.

In the oft quoted plate two birds are perceived, High in the heaven above: These are the spirits of Chang and Kwang-se, A twin pair of ever in love".The last paragraph is a little blurry for me.

Could you please explain the word enumerated below? And teach how to use the words or phrase?

In the oft quoted plate

These What does it represent?

A twin Not lovers?

ever in loveMeans who ever fell in love?

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely Yours
