Actually, it would be great to really discuss the history of Oz immigration here - we normally do all this over in Australia. It is a fascinating psychological and political story - and it would be fun to look at why the US has a different immigration history, leading to your unique (I think?) melting pot.
We have always felt like a wee western country, with hardly anyone on board, and clinging to the fringes, as it were - with numbers of rather overcrowded Asian countries gathered to the north - looking, on the conventional maps, as though gravity alone would cause them to trickle down and overwhelm our culture with their numbers. This nurtured an extremely xenophobic view - blasted apart (thank god) by the coming to power of the Whitlam Labor government in 1972 - which ended the horrible (but never actually legislated) "white australia policy".
Gonna be interesting to look at the latest census figures whn they come out - re ethnic make up - for instance, Buddhism is our fastest growing religion.
